REZUM--HAVE YOU HAD THIS DONE???????

I had a nice conversation today with the President of the "Urology Times". He was telling me that there is a "New Procedure" that has been approved called the "REZUM SYSTEM". The company that makes the system is called "NXThera, Inc". You can google them up and lots of stuff comes up. I called them for a referral and they gave me a Doctor in Minnepolis that has done it over 50 times now. I called his nurse and she said he would call me back and answer my questions on monday. As you guys probably know Doctors are not very good at returning calls but we'll see what happens. Iam not very good at explaining how the procedure works but basically they take the device and put it up the uretha and vaporize the prostate cells which kills them. It works with high pressure "steam" that at a certain degree will kill the prostate tissue. My question for you guys is there anybody out there that has had it done to them and how are you getting along and are there "side effects", etc etc?????

As for the Rezum procedure, I am not prepared to go into an extended recovery period if so needed. Hence, I chickened out and decided to postponed the procedure to a later date. The truth is that I was getting a burning sensation while peeing and was not sure if it was due to an infection or not. Well from now I will continue to monitor the health conditions of those who went through the procedure, and to seek out coping strategies. Thanks to all who have shared their thoughts and have given me valuable advice.

Just to concur with kenneth1955 that they should have given you an overnight bag and also the value of a hot bath or shower. So soon after surgery, a hot shower may be cleaner.

I learnt from the discussion that for a successful Rezum procedure, the prostrate size should be less than 80cc. I will ask Uro to check the size of my prostrate (I think, it is done with Ultrasound). Thanks again for the responses.

I haven't had it done but many on this forum had. Just search for PAE procedure you'll find plenty of discussions. Hank

They can do Rezum on prostates well over 100. Recovery can really vary, but with a temporary stent and self cathing (CIC rather than a Foley) the recovery shouldn't be all that bad. I was back in the gym lifting weights in 5 days and had some burning and urgency, but nothing unbearable.

By "scope" I assume he means a cystoscopy (going through the urethra) and not a Proctoscopy (going in through rectum). A cystoscopy is a good idea before any prostate surgery to check for median lobe, etc, which might also help with Rezum vs PAE, but you can get your prostate volume alone from either MRI or Ultrasound (TRUS). I would think he would want to know the size PRIOR to Rezum. I would! Measure twice, cut once.

Jim I'm thinking the same as you. Should not the Urologist know the size of the prostate and have a game plan before he get's in there or just wing it. He should know how many injection to do before hand and have them ready. It should have been talk over with the patient. I would not let any doctor put anything in me before he talked it over with me and I give permission Ken

You can ask your uro to refer an IR, but most likely you'll have to find your own. Depending on where you live, you can get someone on this forum to recommend one to you. Hank

Guess its time that I chimed in. i am 64 and had the Rezume procedure 1 little over 3 weeks ago. I have had an enlarged prostate for many years and have been taking meds. I decided to do the procedure to shrink my prostate and stop having to take the meds. The procedure hurt, even with the lidocaine up the butt. I hope that as this procedure is more widely practiced, a way is found to diminish the pain. I did not take the Valium was was an option because I had to drive myself home. I had 10 zaps and a catheter inserted since my insurance wouldn't cover a stent. I was advised to keep the catheter in for 2 weeks, which I did. Urine leaked around it, so I wore depends and underwear always. On the way back from the procedure my back started to really hurt over the kidneys, and that continued for 3 weeks, diminishing with time. I took advil 24/7 to help reduce the pain during urination and for my back pain and used a hot pad on my back at night. After 3 weeks the blood is almost stopped (as determined by underwear staining) and my back still is sore, but not terrible. It still hurts to urinate, not terrible, but not wonderful either. I assume that will become normal sometime soon.
I have no regrets. I fully expect my prostate to shrink (don't see how it couldn't!) and will be able to stop taking meds. So, thats my story.

I personally only offer this procedure under twilight anesthesia. One of my partners will do it with local, but I think it's much more comfortable if you don't feel anything during it.
