REZUM--HAVE YOU HAD THIS DONE???????

I had a nice conversation today with the President of the "Urology Times". He was telling me that there is a "New Procedure" that has been approved called the "REZUM SYSTEM". The company that makes the system is called "NXThera, Inc". You can google them up and lots of stuff comes up. I called them for a referral and they gave me a Doctor in Minnepolis that has done it over 50 times now. I called his nurse and she said he would call me back and answer my questions on monday. As you guys probably know Doctors are not very good at returning calls but we'll see what happens. Iam not very good at explaining how the procedure works but basically they take the device and put it up the uretha and vaporize the prostate cells which kills them. It works with high pressure "steam" that at a certain degree will kill the prostate tissue. My question for you guys is there anybody out there that has had it done to them and how are you getting along and are there "side effects", etc etc?????

hang in there kevin, I had a similar result after standard biopsy. on the 5th biopsy i felt a release of fluids out of the penis. it was when i got dressed I noticed it was blood. the biopsy sample punctured the urethra. the next 2 weeks were passing ribbons of blood, clots etc. it was a bloody mess. once the urethra started to heal, the blood became less and less. As for your rezum, sound like the steam didnt cauterize one or more of the injections. Having to catherize is also irritating and compounding your problem. My other guess is possible infection in the urethra. some have mentioned clots in the bladder that block urination, hope the area heals, the blood dissapates and the normal rezum healing takes place. My urologist had a patient who bled a lot during the procedure, she adopted a protocol of finesteride 14 days prior to rezum. I had 15 injections for an XL prostate. 2 lydocaine shots via the rectum, lydocaine gel to numb the urehtra. foley 3.5 days. passed a little pink around the catheter day 2, other than that no bleeding, no pain. was able to urninate slowly on my own. stream picked up around 2 weeks, went off flomax and have been healing for the past 9 months. Hope your better days are ahead. ipss 22 to 8. no leaking, in total control again. good luck

My prostate was 35mm, not too large, but I was significantly blocked... IDK my LUTS score but 2-3 times peeing each night was standard pre-Rezum.
I should say this: my doctor is very caring and appears to be genuinely empathetic and is attentive, hes definitely not apathetic or cold about this. I chose him for this reason... hes a good person. ill be having the cystoscope in just over an hour and update you guys.
Thanks for the support.

My experiences so far have been similar to what Kevin and Michael are reporting. We all seemed to buy into the 2 weeks recovery time, and when that didn't happen, it impacts us more severely than we could have anticipated. At 4+ weeks post procedure now I have realized that the healing seems a bit intermittent. I had one day about 2 weeks post treatment where my steam improved and I thought I was getting better. That lasted about half a day and then I went back into intense burning when peeing and having my stream constricted again. About a week later I had another short stint of hope. I started antibiotics last week in case I had a UTI and after about 3-4 days I felt like things were improving. I didn't get a check at the docs to see if I had one, but had some Amoxicillin and started that anyway just in case. I guess symptoms for a UTI and post-Rezum effects are similar. Now, I'm not sure as it seems like a bit of pain and limited flow are returning, all though not as bad.Just when I start to get some hope of improvement, things seem to go backwards for a while.
I resumed (no pun) sex at about 2 weeks post treatment even though I was still peeing blood and still had pain. Orgasms were weak at first but began to return to normal pretty quickly even though there has always been blood in the semen. I'm curious if anyone knows if orgasm is good for the healing or impedes it?? I've wondered if I have prolonged the healing due to having regular sex, or if perhaps it is actually good for the prostate and in getting rid of the tissue that is being expunged. My experience here is also that things improve and then I've had a few setbacks. Today I felt a distinct new pain in my groin (sharper than normal) and it tends to initially show up as pain in the tip of the penis. I've found the pain is actually in the prostate (I think). I had this happen once before and it went away quickly both times, but I noticed my orgasm this morning was considerably weaker, almost didn't happen. This has happened a few times, and so I'm deducing this is my prostate healing and at least for me, things improve and then go backwards for a while.
Here's wishing you all the best as we continue to heal! Bill

Hey Bill. I don't know if orgasm/ejaculation helps or impedes healing time. My Uro told me to go ahead with sex just yesterday. Good luck convincing my wife as just having an erection causes me to drip whole blood out the tip. Ejaculation is like pure blood, not even a mix of semen. That said, when I ejaculated yesterday it was bloodier and worse than today....
I will say that I was pretty stable the last few days, but last night I had a terrible episode of not being able to get the catheter through my prostate... eventually got it through but talk about scary... so Im worried maybe ejaculation caused more swelling?
At this point IDK which was worse, the depression I felt after 2 weeks of not having an orgasm or the possible increased swelling.
All I can say is that it should be illegal for Rezum to have "improvement after 2 weeks" on their website. Im in hell right now.

I'm happy for you. AZO does work. Make sure you drink cranberry juice or apple there good for you. Stay away from citrus juice. They will irritate the bladder.
Yes it would make nice for them not to sugar coat the procedure. 9 out of 10 men think it is the most painful.
All the best to everyone.
PS I will stay with the Urolift. 5 years and counting.

hey Bill. sounds like you had your procedure done in late September? i wonder the same thing about ejaculation- i just got permission from my doc today and a LOT of whole blood came out. frightening actually... but symptoms feel a bit better now... or maybe im imagining it...

Kevin, yes my procedure was done on Sept. 27th. My cath was in for 10 days and I had sex for the first time just before the 2 week period. Lots of blood with each ejaculation (still). The orgasms quickly improved after that, but sometimes they will return to being a semi-orgasm. This seems to be intermittent for me with mostly an overall improvement. On one of those occasions last week the orgasm was almost non existent and I even thought I might be developing retro as nothing came out. The next time the orgasm was strong with normal ejaculation. That was a relief! I was more scared of orgasms diminishing than the retro.I'm starting to have hope that I'm going to be somewhat normal again. It can make you feel like you're imaging improvements bc it seems to always go backwards for a bit even after some improvements.A few times I've been able to pee with a strong stream and it gives me hope of what is coming.I don't have much pain peeing now, and overall the frequency and urgency is diminishing.I do understand the depression, and how the idea of a 2 week healing period is what really made it worse for us. Hang in there as I suspect you will begin seeing/feeling some relief soon. It really makes me wonder why some of us have this extended healing period. If the norm is more 2 weeks, how come our little prostates are slow healers? I also feel horrible about those that went through all of this and then it didn't even work. My doc told did me previous to having the procedure that there is a small % that go through that.Let us know if that pain starts getting less. I don't think I could have taken much more of those painful urinations every time!

Recovery varies a lot and there doesn't seem to be any way to predetermine how you'll react. But that's true for all prostate procedures. You'll find threads on this site from people who were pretty much good as new a day or two after TURP/Holep/Greenlight and others who still had problems months later. Most are somewhere in between. It would seem that everyone reacts differently to prostate trauma.
Docs should explain the most likely scenario along with what the bottom 10-20% is like so patients can plan accordingly. It took me 3-4 weeks to get a weak stream back but orgasms were fine from day 3 on. Others can pee much sooner but have orgasm issues for a few weeks. Everyone is different and many docs don't prepare people for the range of recovery possibilities.

So today was noticeably better in that I didnt feel any urgency at all, and did not have to self cath at all. My stream is weak and it burns like a MF... I was told by the Urologist that the burn is actually the urine passing through the inflamed prostate but you "feel" it at the tip of your urethra. Anyhow, I did decide to cath tonight to be sure I was voided and I had only 50ml left after peeing, so thats pretty good.
I wanted to thank everyone here who has chimed in. Before I got all the responses that I did, I was super worried something went wrong during the procedure and that my recovery was shaping up to be abnormally long. This all is of course thanks to absolutely, horribly misleading advertising by Boston Scientific, Resume owners.
Now that I know my recovery is looking much more similar to the majority of yours, Im much more relaxed and able to put my concerns aside for now.
Hopefully I wont wake up totally blocked tonight, we will see.

Kevin,
.
Yup, the burn at the prostate can be felt at the tip of the urethra.
.
You are fortunate that your PVR's are 50 ml now. Many of us on this forum waited too long before our Rezums (or other BPH treatments) and our bladders were damaged. Three months after my Rezum, my PVR's were 150 ml. Now 11 months later they are under 90 ml which is normal for my age.
.
And yup, Boston Scientific needs to improve its advertising.

so sorry that you were misinformed about your recovery. I did a lot of research prior to selecting rezum. I gave the least amount of weight to the company selling or leasing the equipment, as they stand to benefit from the procedure. I first noticed increased stream around 2 weeks and got rid of flomax. Important to note that after foley, I was urinating very slowly. most significant improvement was 2 to 3 months down the road. everything just gradually got better, Ability to control urnination and leaking to a final jump last month (9th month) to where i felt totally in control in that area. Hope your progress continues.

I am 7 days post procedure, had the catheter in for 3 days, then 2 days of really hard to pee and almost went to the emergency place. now I am peeing better but still get up about every hour to pee. I had a first post procedure orgasm last night and there was blood everywhere, no semen-- is this normal? does it happen multiple times? Glad the catheter is out, but i was surprised at how hard it was too pee. I had 6 shots of the vapor thing and was told the procedure went well. I did the Urolift 2 months ago-- totally worthless, will never see that Dr again. When the catheter came out, I leaked urine for 2 days/nights, had to change underwear multiples times. So far it was $ well spent. I am 67 and a runner, so don't have stress now when I go for a run.

Had 15 injections jan. 31, urination very slow after 3.5 days of foley. at 2 weeks flow picked up a little and quit flomax. no bleeding at all. gradual improvement thru month 3 where leaking and urgency were starting to improve. at 9 months im in control again. leaking which was 80 percent better went to 100 percent better. Not sure where blood comes from on orgasm. My urologist said she could clearly see the ejac. duct and stayed away from it. time will tell for you. best is yet to come.

yes, i had Rezume done, i did have bleeding for 2 days post catheter. peeing is improving very slowly. Dr said i would not see all the benefits for 3 months. i am taking my Alfuzosin as it makes it easier to pee.
this is much bettrr the Urolift as that was a worthless procedure for me
