REZUM--HAVE YOU HAD THIS DONE???????

Posted , 385 users are following.

I had a nice conversation today with the President of the "Urology Times". He was telling me that there is a "New Procedure" that has been approved called the "REZUM SYSTEM".  The company that makes the system is called "NXThera, Inc".  You can google them up and lots of stuff comes up.  I called them for a referral and they gave me a Doctor in Minnepolis that has done it over 50 times now.  I called his nurse and she said he would call me back and answer my questions on monday.  As you guys probably know Doctors are not very good at returning calls but we'll see what happens.  Iam not very good at explaining how the procedure works but basically they take the device and put it up the uretha and vaporize the prostate cells which kills them.  It works with high pressure "steam" that at a certain degree will kill the prostate tissue.  My question for you guys is there anybody out there that has had it done to them and how are you getting along and are there "side effects", etc etc?????

Going to share my Rezum experience. I almost 63 and have been struggling with BPH the last 4.5 years with my major symptom being lack of flow. My urologist would probably say the biggest thing was retention, but I didn't "feel" that. Lack of flow was the real issue for me and I would occasionally have issues with frequency & urgency. In any event, I had my resume procedure performed 3 1/2 weeks ago. They left a catheter in for 4 days which was no fun, but after that, I peed like a 25-year-old for 11 days! Every time I stood at the toilet an exclamation of "wow!" came out. Then things started to go awry. For four days, I had diffuse pain in the area of my bladder/prostate/rectum. Nothing too severe, but when it woke me up at 2 AM on the 4th day, I decided I was calling the doctor today. But when I woke up for real at 7 AM the pain was completely gone. This is where it gets strange... while I had the pain, I was still peeing well, Not as well as the prior 11 days, but if those were 9-10 out of 10, now I was around 8 out of 10. As soon as the pain went away, I started having flow issues. I went through five days of my flow varying between a 2 and 6 out of 10. BUT, today, I dropped to less than a 1 out of 10. Being Sunday, I tried to tough it out for a while, but by 3:00 PM I was headed for the ER. As I am sitting here right now, I am once again dealing with a catheter.

At this point, based on the phone conversations I had with the urology office this week, I am hoping for the best that this is very temporary and I will soon be catheter free and once again peeing like a 25-year-old. They have told me that others have experienced similar, tempory swelling and are not doing well. For the life of me, I do not understand how the swelling shows up 15 days after the procedure, but I am hoping & praying they are correct.

I'm sharing this now and I plan to write an update in about a month. I'm hoping it's a happy update!

Sorry for a few typos above. Most important, it should say "others have experienced similar, tempory swelling and are NOW doing well" instead of " others have experienced similar, tempory swelling and are NOT doing well."

Bob  I live in Florida also.  When you have that surgery or any procedure with the prostate you will get swelling,  But it will go away in time when the prostate relaxes.  Here is another example.  weeks ago I have a heart cath done and had no bruiesing for the first 2 days.  After I started to move around I got a bruise from my groin to my knee.  It almost gone now. But it take time for the body to heal Just relax and drink alot of water  Ken

You probably have a UTI (urinary tract infection) which antibiotics will treat successfully. Don't wait - go back to your urologist, do a pee sample and they'll know in a couple of days. This kind of post surgical reaction isn't typical of anything else and it won't do anything but get worse til you treat it.

Kenneth, thanks for the encouraging words! I cannot explain how demoralizing it was to get recath'd! You are pretty much in agreement with my urologist so I have my fingers crossed. Thanks again!

OB, thanks for the info. The ER did run a culture and although they did not have the UTI infection results immediately, they did see elevate white cells so they have already started me on Sipro. And I'm set up with a urologist appointment later this week. Thanks again!

I have been cathed 3 weeks after my rezum. First fill and pull a no go. Second voided enough they left it out. By the end of that day it was back in. Now a week later I am getting clots and blood in my bag. Like you my white cells were up and they put me on an anti biotic.

Hopefully there are better days in store for both of us! My ER cath lasted 4 days and then they replaced it with a "prostatic stent." The stent will stay in for 3 1/2 weeks. So right now I am bagless and doing OK (you can kind of feel the stent). Just hoping everything is good when it comes out.

My cath was pulled today. Iwas filled with about 240 ml. I Voided all of it. Drank 2 bottles of water. Seems like I have to go every 20 minutes or so. slight burning at the end, so it's hard to tell if I really have to go. I have been relieving about 100 ml at a time, but atleast I am going. The good thing is there is no bladder spasms.

Do any of you fellows by chance sleep with a "C-Pap machine"???   I have been just recently diagnosed with "Sleep Apnea" and now I have to get a machine.  I've already done the "study" and stayed overnight at the "Local Sleep Center".  I was diagnosed with a "42" which I guess is pretty severe sleep apnea.

I am going to have the Rezum procedure done in Sep. It would be a great help if all those that have had the procedure keep updating on any positive or negative feedback. This thread has been very helpful and I am sure there are a lot of grateful BPH sufferers that are following closeley!

I had my Rezum done in May 2016 at the Cleveland Clinic and I can't say anything negative. The most common complaint I hear is pain injection of the local anesthetic, but not so in my case. Of the five bursts of steam I had a slight amount of pain on the fifth(last)one.  Where are you having it done? You should be able to drive home if you wish.

I am having it done in Tucson by an Urologist who was part of the original clinical trial. I have been following the thread for over three months and the responses seem very positive. I am hoping this procedure will allow me to go off of Rapaflo, which has too many side effects.

Curious as to what sides effects you experience with  Rapaflo? I've been on Tamsulosin, and have pretty bad effects.

16 days post Rezum. I can't say that it wasn't painful because it was the worst 5 minutes of my life. The next day I was worn out (couldn't sleep due to catheter) but the following day I had no pain and really nothing to speak of since. I had the Cath for 5 days. No fun at all but I did ok. The guys on this forum were a great help with telling me to use neosporum and cleaning the insertion point of the tube with alcohol. And then a lot of vasaline and neosporum. No matter what I did I couldn't get comfortable walking around with it so I didn't. After I took it out I have been great. All my symptoms are lessening. I also want to tell you that I have a large gel filled ice pack for sprained ankles etc. I would put that cold pack high between my legs(under scrotum) and the cool really helped. Doesn't freeze but very cold. I took fewer drugs because of this. Anyway it helped me........ Even with the initial procedure pain, I would do it again. The doc said I am the only one to ever tell him that the Rezum was incredibly painful. I must have a low threshold of pain. So for all you sensitive types... You can do this. It's over quickly and so far the results are great. I'll post again in acouple of weeks

I had the REZUM procedure June 28. The deadening of my prostate was the most discomfort I had, not to say that the actual steam injections weren't. In and out of the urologist's office in an hour, relatively pain free and with a catheter. Back to the doctor's office three days later for catheter removal. Small amount of blood in urine for another week. After two weeks, I was still experiencing some of the same symptoms that had driven me to have my prostate treated (frequent urination, incomplete emptying of bladder, weak stream). Urologist told me to be patient as improvements could take 30-60 days, and he was right. A month out and my stream is stronger and I can get through the night with only two urinations. I had been having overnight leakage and that is now gone. I'm still taking Flomax and hope to be able to discontinue that with my next doctor's checkup. In summary, REZUM has been well worth it.

Steve,  I live in Tucson and would appreciate knowing who is going the rezume.  I have used a uro there for years who is medieval in his approach.
