Rib pain - is this costochondritis?

Posted , 7 users are following.

Six weeks ago my doctor said I had Costo  because the pain was in my breastbone and front of my chest (felt like a heart attack).  That pain has now gone, but I am in constant pain in my right hand side ribs, it's been there now for 4 days, put heat on it, gel, took pain killers nothing shifts it.  I can't walk far because the pain gets worse.  I can't do the housework, just wiping the kitchen worktops makes it worse.  Does anyone else suffer with this?

When I have "spells" or flare ups with mine, it can get to where it hurts to do anything, including breathing. This can last for up to a week. Within the past few months I've found that if I take 2 alleve, followed by one every 12 hours(or whatever the directions indicated) it tends to eliminate the "spell" within a couple of days.

    Good Luck!

I was first told i had costro...then several weeks later when i developed a lump on the second part of my sternum followed with some redness and warmth on my chest and half way up my neck, i was told it was tietze. Mine started with sharp pains like you described and yes i had it on my right side in my ribs. It has been a battle for me but 2 mths after i was tested for everything and they were sure i had tietze and nothing serious, it got better. I still have pains on my left and right sides. i still have the lump, and nothing took care of the pain. I did take 3 ibup 2x a day for awhile but it started to upset my stomach. I hate to say it but theres not much you can do. I found that eating raw veggies and cherries helped a bit, but the best thing you can do is sit. Dont try to do housework or anything that involves lifting your arms, and limit car rides if you can. The best medician was finding Jesus and reading the Bible...i got saved after all this happen to me because i really thought i was dieing. Ive been saved for the past 3 mths, and i can tell you that when i put my faith in the Lord, and knew without doubt that he could heal me...I got better. I hope you dont have to deal with mths of pain.

Hurrah, I'm glad I'm not the only one and sorry for the other people out there suffering with costro chondritis, I can't believe this condition can make me feel so depressed!  I first went to doctors in November because I also thought I was having a heart attack, and after months it was the duty nurse who recognised what it was because her friend had had it a long time ago.  I haven't had a day without this chest pain since November and I try not to let it get me down but it's hard not to, and as a very active person sportswise, I have to think all the time not to work or play too hard because of the pain afterwards.  You're right everyone there is no medication for it sad but I do find that when I lay down at night it eases and in the morning I just feel that my ribs ache rather than sternum hurting, anyone else find this is the case?
