Hello All

after of week of constant dizzyness I went to the hospital the doctor there did some test to evaluate my condition (standing, sitting, eye moement etc) did not look at my ear at all but said I have labyrinthitis which is why I am dizzy. My question is how long will this last? he said medication was not neccesary but I feel like my heart races when I stand up, I feel woozy and dizzy, off and on, I know part of it is anxiety but is this normal? anyones feedback would be appreciated. It's scary and I don't think the doctor particularily was helpful.

    Hi Shane,

If it continues you will need more info

Test info to complete a full evaluation. The tests necessary are determined at the time of examination and may include hearing and balance tests, x-rays, CTs or MRI scans, blood tests, and ultrasound tests. A general physical examination and neurological tests may also be needed. The most common test for dizziness is the VNG or video nystagmography. In this test, the strength of the inner ear is tested as well as the coordination of eye movement. It involves monitoring the eye movements with a video camera after placing warm or cool air into the ear canal. This usually causes a transient sensation of dizziness. Before the test, it is important not to take any medications that can affect the result such as Valium, Antivert, alcohol, and others.

    Even ENTs can do VNGs

there can be a problem with "pigeon holing" however, when defining people's, symptoms arria as I have experienced only too well.  sometimes a lot,of us Actually experience all of  the above that  you mention,  at different times, according to where we are, ie inside or outside, on a moving vehicle, lying down, or standing up. then there are different times of day, whereby when more tired pr exhausted other symptoms can kick in like .air hunger, palpitations, nausea, etc., that may not actually be present when being tested.  I have had all those tests, some more than once, and although I,ve been told I have some kind of "chronic . disequiliberium" , the consultants , physios, etc etc still cannot define, nor diagnose the cause, nor specific treatment.  I agree that Shane definitely needs to have all of those tests if he hasn't, already, but  they are not necessarily a panacea for diagnosis as I have all,too sadly found out.

I will try to get through this week, and I do have anxiety issues which again I am sure is not helping this process. If after this week things are still not going well I will seek the attention of my family doctor. I have been getting the palpitations, nausea, dizzyness on and off, and I'm sure part of the greif is not being 100% certain what is happening (not that the doctors can be 100%) I am trying to keep positive though.

The palpitations are really worrying, but stress doesn't normally cause palpitations. If your Dr is not worried about that , change your Dr.

I would suggest you need a 24 hour ECG that will examine that.

As for the Vertigo, suggest to your Dr that Betahistine is a recognised drug for this condition.(16mg 3 times daily|) followed by I Cinnarizine at night.

These have really helped me. Fortunately my Dr diagnosed me immediately. It started with the bedroom spinning and inability to get out of bed in the morning.

Hope you find this helpful. Let us know what your Dr says.

      Best wishes

      Pauline.

Stress can and does cause palpitations. I have had the heart monitor for them, didn't have any whilst I was wearing it!!  Always the way.  This condition is anxiety provoking as the medical profession have no answers, and we are left floundering and coping on our own.  I have never been offered any drugs, nor have I asked for any, and the reason is that if they don't know what this is, how the hell they can they prescribe drugs for me.  I try to get in as much exercise as I can, even though sometimes it is an effort, I always feel better when I have done some.  I rest when I'm exhausted and try not to think about the whole thing too much. Sometimes that actually workssmile

all the best with it. ChristineChristine

I've also had anxiey issues ! My doctor increased my antidepressant/anxiety pills. I believe it's just the Labyrinthitis that causes the anxiety because not being able to hear & feeling disorientated is very anxiety provoking for me. Dena

Hi Shane - just to throw another light on it, Ive had it three years too (didnt want to tell you that) and having seen GP, several ENT, neuro surgeon, and two neurologists, they diagnosed me with silent migraine.  I have a bad neck too from a car crash and Im wondering if my problem is with my SCM muscles.  You need to google that.  The symptoms are exactly the same.  But they are just guessing.  Ive had balance tests, blood tests, and an MRI.  Had endless medications none of which did anything except betahistine last time I had vertigo but not this time.  Ive had epilepsy tablets and beta blockers.  Nortriptylene helped a bit but its a muscle relaxant or anti depressant cant remember which.  Didnt get rid of it though. It has improved from where it was last year but I put that down to learning to live with it and accepting it.  Hence not as stressed.  Dont get depressed any more but get p*ssed off.  Ive got an appointment on monday next regarding seeing whether my neck is responsible for the dizziness and not migraine but I honestly dont think I will get anywhere.   Absolutely none of the doctors have a clue about any of it.  They truly are all useless.

    Hi,

I know it's been a long time since you wrote in. I would be interested in how long you had this for ??  I have had it for a month and it's awful. I am very deaf. My ears make noises, and now the dizziness is back. I feel off balance when I walk. My ears make noise 24/7. I had a really bad episide of Vertigo and throwing up continually... which landed me in emergency by ambulance. Ofcorse, ALL my vitals were ok... normal. I am so tired of this and am hearing it could last for months. sad

    Thanks.
