Even 3 years later I am unable to carry anything heave on the side that has the new hip. Well let me rephrase that, technically I am able to lift up something heavy on that side, I don't fall over, but afterwards that hip hurts like H*ll. For example lifting a heavy suitcase from the baggage claim running rubber belt onto a luggage cart. I am going to feel that afterwards for the next 24 hours. A suitcase of 20/22 kilos or 50lbs, that is going to be to much for me without me suffering afterwards.
I very heavy grocery bag, I also can carry that but I am going to have a pain in my hip for the rest of the day. The next morning I'm fine. I know a lady in USA who had her hip replaced and her doctor told her never to lift anything over 20lbs, like ever. So you may never again be able to lift and carry heavy items, I know I can't. I carry heavy stuff on my other side, but I can feel that hip is going and it won't be that many more years until I will need that hip replaced also. I just accept this as this is the way it is and at least it is SO MUCH BETTER than having the bad hip that I don't fret and fuss over it. For heavy shopping if my husband isn't there I simply use two lighter bags instead of one heavy bag. At airports I ask people next to me in baggage claim to lift my suitcase onto my luggage cart for me, people are more than happy to help, it's an inconvenience but honestly not a big deal.
It is not abnormal to still have butt pain at 5 months, however the groin pain is an issue you should try to get to the source of.

That doesn't sound right. I definitely wouldn't argue if my surgeon told me I couldn't lift over 20 lbs (there might be other factors for the lady you mentioned). I would follow up if you're having that much pain after that long in your hip. At 5.5 weeks post-surgery I had to carry a 50 pound bag of grain across the yard from my car and didn't have any trouble with my hip. But I also have lingering soft-tissue issues from all my problems before I had the surgery that my physical therapist is now addressing. The point of this surgery is to give us back our mobility and take away the pain so the doctors need to figure out why you're still so limited and fix it.

horsequartet, may I ask if you are male or female?
I have no pain at all in my hip unless I carry something heavy on that side. But it eventually goes away and it is not such an excruciating pain that I am doubled over. It is more like, "Ouch"

I'm female. 51 years old.
I would get it checked out with a physical therapist if I were you.
I don't have any hip pain lifting heavy stuff but at 7 weeks (as of tomorrow) I have some pretty bad pains if I try to move my leg certain ways that would be normal range of motion for a person with a good hip. My PT says it is all really tight tendons and fascia from the lack of range of motion pre-surgery made worse by the inflammation post-surgery. But thankfully nothing to do with my new joint!
Maybe that's what's going on with you is there is a tendon or ligament that is unhappy and just needs a PT to help you fix it?
