Right Hip Replacement

Hi, I'm a 48 year old guy and I'm getting my right hip replaced next Tue 5th March. To say I'm worried is an understatement! It's not so much the op it's the waking up in pain part that's worrying me and I've got this daft thought in my head that if I bend my hip the wound will burst open, I know I'm being daft about it and loads get done every year but it's really bothering me. I've also been advised to have the epidural instead of the general, can anyone advise which is best?

As your operation is now very close - just want to wish you all the best for the day and after. I am sure you will be fine.
Pass my regards to all the nurses, physiotherapists, resident doctors, dinner ladies and others on the ward. Rest assured they will look after you!
Mr Wootton has done wonders for me and he will do the same for you!
Best wishes and good luck!

Thanks for the good wishes. As you can imagine I am very nervous now. Still a week today and I should have had the operation. Just wish I could fast forward myself to that time!
I will definitely give your regards to everyone. I just hope I have the same result as you did.

I understand your pre-op feelings. I was exactly the same!
I honestly also believe that I am not unique in having such good outcome. When talking to the people in the hospital, they all told me precisely how things will be! At the time - it was almost unbelievable to me, but it all came true!
I think that Mr Wootton is the key to it. It is his skill that makes it possible. And he has a very good team of people there too. I am so glad that I found him, because I am convinced that it is his skill that makes the outcome so good. It took me a year of research to identify him and I am so glad that I did. You will be in the best hands, so try not to worry.
What time is your operation? I will be keeping my fingers crossed for you!
All will be fine, Brenda! Please believe it! I am talking from personal experience!
Are you still going ahead with the epidural instead of the general? I would love to hear your feedback on it - just in case I need the other hip replaced in the future and epidural is a better and safer option then. However, I fear that I am not sufficiently brave for being awake during the operation.
Take care for now

I don't have a time for my op yet, other than it will be early morning. He doesn't normally operate on a Friday but agreed as it was easier for the people coming with me with regard to work. I should be out the following Monday.
From everyone who has had an epidural (there is a facebook page re THR) they have all had a degree of sedation along with it. I think it depends on how nervous the person is to how much they are sedated lol. I will definitely let you know how it goes. One of my biggest fears was the general anaesthetic so hopefully, the epidural will suit me. Though my daughter who used to be an orthopaedic nurse told me to go for a general!

You should be fine! They will look after you! My anesthetist was Dr Jones and he is equally as good as Mr Wootton. They will make sure you are fine. You still have time to change your mind about the method of sedation, but they will discuss it with you prior to the op in any case.
My operation was first thing in the morning. I was asleep in the theatre well before 9 am. I was in the hospital from the afternoon on the day before as we are 220 miles distance from there. My husband dropped me off, drove back and then collected me later in the week.
Anyway - have a relaxing week, do not worry - just look forward to your new improved life after the op. Try and imagine the sense of freedom and wellbeing, when after years of pain and discomfort and little mobility - you are suddenly free to go anywhere on your own 2 legs and without pain and any restrictions! And not in a duck's fashion - up and down - with bad hip and one leg shorter. It is amazing! I have not stopped smiling and feeling happy since the day of the operation. I am sure you will tell me the same - when sharing your experiences in a couple of weeks!
Take care and keep in touch!

PS Wilky - regards to you too. I hope you had a good experience as well. I do not do Facebook, so I cannot go to your forum there. But I trust that you are as happy and well after your replacement as I am.

Hi Everyone
I have just found this webpage and i must admit it has gone a long way to alleviating my fears. I am 40yrs and have always been extremely sporty however over two years ago i started to have problems with my right hip. I have tried everything without sucess and now have just put myself forward for the hip replacement. I am scared but am desperately trying to talk myself out of it however i think its time to woman up so to speak ha. I cant say i am in extrem pain as that only occurs what i exercise and i have very limited movement. So basically as i continually rattling on, do you think it is worth waiting until the pain becomes excessive or just get it done as at least i will get most of my sporting activity back?
Any advice would greatly be appreciated as i think the op will take place in ~Nov 13? If i am also being honest i feel like i would be less of a woman,,,,, strange feeling i know.

I am 45 years old & having a left THR this Wednesday, 2nd October at the RJAH Hospital, Gobowen, Shropshire. Up until now I have been feeling completely relaxed about the whole operation, but today panic is setting
in. The spinal block/anaesthetic is my main concern. I am worrying about complications!
Some of the posts have put my mind at rest but like the rest of you all on here I suppose worrying is natural. I will keep reading with interest & following the progress.....think I will join the Facebbook group too.

waiting for lift off!! I am nervous but excited at the same time. Hip has been very painful for the past couple of weeks so it will be so good to be pain free.
I joined the Facebook forum, mentioned above, and it's brilliant. Highly recommended!

Anxious husband.
Pain level manageable. Slight swelling of my thigh, compression socks a real pain and I know it will be worth wearing them in the end.
Hb levels low and BP too - told to stop taking BP medication and keep a close eye on BP bit scary, as soon as I can I will go to GP
Looking forward to another day tomorrow.
Heal well everyone
