Have you seen your Dr ? Are you are aware of having hurt yourself in any way ?
Is there anything that makes it worse Do you have pain at night when you lie on it ?
I find ice pack is better than heat The pain could be a shoulder or a neck problem Do you have any history of arthritic problem You don't say how old you are
I have just had keyhole surgery to my shoulder I had a tear in my rotator cuff They were unable to repair it but did a debrinement and removed an inflamed Bursa Shaved a bit of bone to make more room.To date I am doing very well
If you have not seen the Dr I like you treated myself for about 2 months before I saw my GP I had some Physio plus cortisone injection
You really need to seek.medical advice to really know what is going on

Hi Annemarie - I agree with Susan in that you haven't mentioned your age or any previous injury. I was similar to you in that I tried those same remedies (I am 67). Ultimately when the pain continued, I saw an ortho Dr. who did an X-ray and not seeing anything dramatic in the X-ray, gave me a cortisone shot. After a couple of months with no improvement, I went back to the Dr., when he recommended an MRI. Bottom line is that the MRI showed a completely torn rotator cuff. I guess what I'm trying to say is that you need to see a Dr, preferably an Ortho Dr., who will likely do the first line of treatment - X-ray and maybe a cortisone shot. Perhaps they will recommend exercises. I think you're doing all the right things, but if it''s not improving, time to see a doctor. I wish you the best. We all know the extreme agony shoulder problems cause.

Sorry I am 35 and no knownarthritic problems.. no known injury it's been gradually worsening over last few months to the point now it's unbearable at times. At present movement of arms not restricted but feelhas less power\strength. Its definately very painful to lay on. I have avoided Gp to date as seemed odd could move ok but pain is so deep and unbearable

Losing strength in your arms and being painful to lay on is an indicator for problems with rotar cuff. It eventually leads to reduce ROM. It definatly needs checking out by a Dr.
The reason people mention age is because it is more common in older people but does not preclude you younger ones. Arthritis is not always/generally a factor in rotar cuff particularly with someone your age.
What ever you decide to do, Good luck.

Well Anne Marie go back in the two weeks or sooner if need be
I had naproxen in the house from a knee injury so tried that.myself
I had a struggle to get where I am I didn't go to Dr for 2 months I was recommended to have Physio.and I did it privately Made it worse Did say he thought it was rotator cuff
Went back saw different GP XRay some arthritis in shoulder I asked for a scan(can't have MRI as I have a spinal stimulator for chronic pain) Told they don't do scan for over 60 I dug my heels in saying I would have it privately I disagreed with him that the problem was arthritis of the shoulder I had swelling and bursitis Eventually he referred me to see Shoulder Orthopaedic surgeon This was September (first saw GP in May) Scan showed I did have a tear so on waiting list Took nearly 5 months but in the end I have had my surgery on 8th April
So keep going Ask for a referral GP not able to request MRI etc Keep strong.
Sorry this may discourage you but I am recovering well post operatively

I was given Naproxene initially but when this failed to work was referred to the hospital for an ultra sound. I have had ultra sounds on both my arms and they have proven 100% accurate. These can be refered by GPs. I had consultant radiographer the first time and in his report he stated that it needed an op. My GP followed his advice.
Good luck
