Right sided pain

Recently diagnosed with UC my pain is usually left sided however I sometimes get lower right sided pain which can be quite severe.  I have had this right side pain for the last 24hours and it is really painful. Is this anything to worry about and is it normal for UC ? I thought the pain was usually left sided which I normally have along with quite bad joint pains.

Hi seb, I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis in August 2013. I get discomfort & some pain on the left side but I do also get discomfort on the top right as unfortunately my colitis is beyond the left area. Having said that I don't know how inflammed your bowel is but you should not be having to suffer severe pain anywhere in your body. I think you should call your IBD clinic & speak to a nurse or leave a message for them to ring you back, failing that call your own GP telling them you have UC & have severe pain & need an appointment today.

I don't know what it is about this disease but the common thread seems to be that we all try to cope & struggle on. Sometimes struggling on can actually lead you to the condition becoming worse so never think you can't ring for help or advise it could save you ending up really poorly & worse case scenario a spell in hospital. I know! As just spent 18-23 December in hospital & they're querying me going back now - due to me 'struggling on'. Remember if you had severe back ache or toothache you'd need help so don't ignore your bowel & think oh well I have to put up with this. Your medical team will want to know anyway what's happening to you so they can give you the best & most appropriate treatment even if they just say take a paracetamol! Please post back how you get on.

Thanks buster gut for the advice and sorry to hear you've been so unwell with your UC.  I was diagnosed last year in hospital and I am now waiting for a GI outpatient appointment which isn't until March! So I only have my GP at the moment for advise which isn't much help as tells me I need to see the GI (if only !!)  anyway glad to know it's not unusual with UC to get the pain in the right side and I will have to try my GP if it carries on.

Hi mzmcgee thanks for the reply, that's interesting about the gallbladder link to UC I had loads of gallbladder related pain before my UC diagnosis, they never found any stones on scans however after suffering with it for a year finally had my gallbladder removed  and was found to be very infected.  My upper right pain from the gallbladder has completely gone since but I'm left with lower pain which I think is related to the UC

Hi Seb I'm not sure what a GI is? You don't have to wait for this appointment in March if you are clearly unwell phone outpatients or IBD clinic & say worse can't wait or go to GP for help now. Have you seen a IBD  nurse or doctor yet at an IBD clinic?

as mzmcgee1231 posted it could be your gallbladder. Your  appendix also in that area.

we had to be quite forceful in the early days to speed up seeing someone. That was down to my notes still sitting in a department & not being transferred to the IBD clinic. Once my husband phoned & said I lost 2 stones in six weeks & how ill I was I got seen very quickly & they actually wanted me to come into hospital there & then. So a bit of administration error but to be honest if you don't tell them then they assume you're ok. It will actual help you & them in your treatment if you see them now rather that waiting.
