Right sided throat and ear pain for months

Hi guys, this is going to be a long post. I am a bit stuck and I need some help.

For almost three months I have been having a constant pain in my throat, right side only. It does not feel like tonsil pain, it feels further down that that. It is a constant pain and there is no change on swallowing. The roof of my mouth at the back on the right side also hurts sometimes but not always and I also have intermittent ear pain on that side.

Two years ago I was diagnosed with LPR, I had a barium swallow test and a panendoscopy which both showed refund and nothing else. I had these investigations because I was feeling a lump in my throat on the right side, where the pain is now but at this time I did not have any pain. I started omeprazole 20th twice a day and the lump in my throat disappeared.

I do not feel any symptoms of reflux and I never have done. This time I do not have the lump in my throat but pain instead. I am wanting to know if the pain could still be caused by LPR.

I have been to see my GP twice in the last few months and in my experience they don't seem to know much about LPR. When I first went a month ago they changed my prescription from omeprazole to lansoprazole 30mg once a day and also prescribed a course of antibiotic spray for my ear as it was inflamed.

My symptoms had not improved so I went back to the doctor two weeks ago and they have increased the lansoprazole to 30mg twice a day and when she looked at my ear she said that it is inflamed and the ear drum is scarred and does not recommended the spray for that. Could LPR also be causing the ear problem, if it is even causing the throat pain at all? It has been two weeks taking the lansoprazole 30th twice a day and still no improvement.

I must add, I am also a smoker and would smoke 25 cigarettes a day - roll ups. For the last two weeks I have smoked three cigarettes a day, I am struggling to give up completely. I have also changed my diet and am only eating reflux friendly foods.

Any help with this would be much appreciated, thanks in advance.

I am so sorry you are feeling pain .I do have problem with acid reflux as per doctor but I didn't feel any sore in my mouth .my taste buds on tongue are swollen at extreme back of the tongue and I have sore throat.these symptoms persist for year now .due to daily rounds to hospital I would suggest you visit gastro specialist for further evaluation.

Thank you Ravi for your reply, I think my doctors next call is to refer me back to ENT.

I cannot see any sores or swelling to my mouth or throat and the doctors say is looks normal. Only my ear that is visibly inflamed.

Have you tried anything to reduce your symptoms like ppi or dietry changes?

So just an update for anyone following, I have kept up the lansoprasole 30mg twice a day and the diet. I am only smoking three roll ups a day but can't kick the habit completely.

Yesterday I coughed up some yellow phlegm and had some fever, aching limbs and back pain and headache. This morning I had some congestion behind my nose and when I cleared it was yellow phlegm with red blood. The aches are gone but the throat pain remains.

I went to the doctor today and have been prescribed am amoxicillin for 7 days. I hope it helps. He did say my chest is clear. I have a cough but it is not a chesty cough. Could it be infection causing my symptoms the whole time?

Just in case any one is following. My gp did a fast track referral to ent. This is something they do to rule out anything sinister.

I have had my appointment with the ent doctor and on examination he could not see anything. He used a small camera on a flexible tube to look from my nose to my throat and did not see anything there.

He referred me for an mri scan which I had last Friday.

I haven't heard anything yet... no news is good news, right??!!

My symptoms are the same if not worse at times. The right sided throat and mouth pain is worse in the mornings and late a night. As well as the pain I can sometimes feel/ hear my heart beating in my right ear, mostly at night when I am laying in bed.

Not been here for a while. Just another update in case it might help someone out.

My MRI scan showed nothing aside from a dilated salivary glad which is not the source of my problem. The ENT doctor feels this is solely reflux related and advised that I am taking lansoprazole twice a day as it only lasts 16hours. I have been doing this and now my throat pain has gone away since March.

I also eliminated acid foods from my diet so I think this helped.
