Right upper abdominal pain
Posted , 5 users are following.
Hi everyone, I’m now at around 15 months into this horrible virus. I’m still suffering with terrible right upper and sometimes stomach pain, bloating, digestive problems.
After 2 ct scans, 3 ultrasounds, endoscopy and more blood tests than I can remember the only things that have really shown up are Ebv as a past infection , slight gastritis and raised liver enzymes (around 95 alt) On my last blood tests the Ebv levels were higher from a past infection so apparently it came back or I caught it again!
This abdominal pain is so bad all I can do is lay on my back all day which seems to ease it slightly. Has anyone else experienced anything like this for so long? The doctors say the liver doesn’t cause pain like this so I’m at a loss. It’s so depressing to go this long without knowing what’s causing this horrible pain. Any advice would be much appreciated

Now I want to check my pancreas because no one has checked it!
I still get shooting pains every now and then right behind my lower rib cage on both sides. Is that where your pain is?

Hi Lisa thanks for your reply 😊 my gastritis was diagnosed at about 3 months but the doctor wasn’t concerned and said there it wouldn’t cause pain. Strangely at that time my digestion was fine! That went downhill after about a year. I now get a lot of stomach and the odd bowel pain as well.
My main pain is around the gallbladder area but all the tests say that it is fine. I do find sometimes that eating eases the pain which I find strange. I was put on omeprazole after one of my emergency hospital visits but after 6 weeks of that I felt so bad I had to stop. Luckily they checked my pancreas at this time as well.
My pain is constant and more of a really deep gnawing pain with the odd shooting pain for good measure!
I will order some dgl supplements to see if that helps thank you.
Are you managing to work and drive etc? I haven’t done either since January

My worst part was last July- oct. Then I started to recover and by mid November thought I beat it. I started exercising again and I horribly relapsed. Since then it’s been this up and down pattern. I can drive- to the store and to drop kids off- but work has been tough. My husband thank god can support us. I’m an actor so my work is varied. I just started taking a few jobs but it is so hard. I’m so ready to be done with this virus. I’m so sick when I wake up and I still can’t do anything more physical than walking.
I just started seeing an amazing Chinese herbalist and acupuncturist. He believes the herbs will heal me. I’ve got all my fingers crossed!

Thanks Lisa I think some kind of alternative medicine might be beneficial.
I’ve been to see my constultant this evening who can see no reason why I’m having all this pain/swelling/bloating. I’ve now been referred to a surgeon for maybe exploratory surgery! 😱
Very strangely I was in agony whilst there but by the time I’d had blood tests and got home the pain had eased a lot. I have had this a few times after I’ve been doing something it seems to ease. It’s normally a terrible constant pain but it makes me wonder about things like a trapped nerve or maybe post viral ibs ?!
I’m glad you are managing to some day to day tasks Lisa, I expect to seeing your name up in lights sometime soon 😊

Definitely hoping and praying that this works for you Lisa, I know how wearying and discouraging it can be when you try so many things you sometimes don't even want to try anything else for fear of disappointment again.
This sounds like someone good to go with, someone who has help heal those kind of things!! Still thinking about you and rooting for you, and one way or another I still have faith that you are going to be healed Lisa so just take care of yourself right now and remember better times are ahead!

Hi Ashley,
My apologies that I only read this message from you after messaging from your other one. I am so sorry to hear you have still been having this terrible abdominal pain, goodness knows you must be so weary and tired and fed up. I just hope and pray things get better Ashley, I still believe God has a great plan for you and that He needs you well for that and is going to pull you through - thinking about you and do watch the healing testimony video I sent in the private message it is a good one!
Sometimes when you feel like you've done everything you can all you can do is just tell God and trust Him. I know it's not easy Ashley to hold onto hope and optimism when not seeing things change or improve, I do really understand and know what that feels like, and it is an awful thing to feel and go through. Thinking about you at this time and just take one day at a time and don't look far ahead.
There was a period in the second year when I was recovering from mono that my blood test showed active for EBV again, despite it generally showing normal apart from the first time I was diagnosed. It terrified me as I thought maybe I have to go through all the same thing over again - please know that it's not the case Ashley, this virus can never harm you the way it did at first and thanks to God I felt better again within a few weeks - these kind of relapses can occur and hoping and praying it is short-lived and things can settle down for you. Oregano and siberian ginseng I've found are good herbs for combating viruses, as well as taking 1/2 teaspoon full of baking soda in plain water twice a day for a week or two.
Have you ever heard of something called Bowen Therapy? That is another thing that has helped me a lot with various ailments over the years. It is a very natural, safe and non-evasive therapy, working on your body's healing response through fascia. it can help with pain and energy levels and general health and wellbeing. Not widely practised but maybe worth looking up to see if there is a therapist in your area - at the very worst can do no harm and I would definitely recommend it as has helped me.

At the moment I’m wondering whether it’s maybe post viral syndrome doing all this. You wouldn’t think you could be in so much pain and have so much swelling etc without any answers. The anxiety is really bad for me too at the moment, I was even shaking having blood taken which isn’t normally a problem at all. Deep down I just hope I wake up one day feeling better

Hi Ashley and Lisa,
I came to the forum today specifically looking for people who were having these type of issues. Today, is my "Monoversary" and right around my onset I also had a tingling, irritating sensation near my lower left rib cage. It is also visibly swollen in this area. That has been going on for the past year, getting better and worse at times. Currently it is bothersome enough that I can't lay on my left side which stinks because that's my favorite side to lay on and as we all know, us Mono people spend a lot of time in bed!
In addition, about 3 weeks ago, I started having, nausea, bloating, and what I think are pains coming from my colon. Overall, my abdomen feels "off" and I will get these shooting pains every so often. I haven't been to the doctor yet with these new pains. From previous experience with digestion issues, I knew they would first tell me to drink magnesium citrate and let my system clear out. I did that two days ago (not fun!) and everything still feels the same. I hesitate to return to the doctor because I don't want to go through a bunch of testing just to find out it is the Mono. It feels weird/concerning to me that these new issues have started after having had Mono for so long.
Thank you for listening. It always helps to share with others and know I'm not alone in this.

Hey kris, good to hear from you. I went for a year with my digestion being fine. Even through the worst parts of the illness there was only slight bloating. The bloating started about 3 months in and shortly after the pain under my right rib and it’s been there ever since. Strangely it’s all on my right hand side. I too can’t lay on my side as it is so painful. It feels swollen every time I try.
Although I hate the testing I think it’s worth you getting checked out just in case. I’m not saying it is anything other than mono but better be safe 😊

Hey Kris,
Really sorry to hear that you're having these horrible symptoms and issues at the moment, I do understand that sometimes the thought of just going to the doctor and having to go through that whole process can be enough just to make you not want to go anywhere near there. I know from my experience I have often felt discouraged with doctors because they don't seem to always take the time or show the compassion that is needed to help with its an ongoing and draining problem like mono.
Hoping that your bloating and nausea and all these issues settle down soon Kris, and that this is just a small setback in the grand scheme of overall recovery. Definitely hoping and praying that is the case. Have you tried taking probiotics and maybe peppermint capsules, I think those things can be very good for digestion and the stomach and colon. I've definitely found a great deal of benefit from probiotics over the years, or if you prefer eating maybe a yoghurt or 2 a day is another way of getting good probiotics.
Definitely not alone in this Kris, thinking about you and believing even though that is might not feel like it's starting great that Year 2 is going to be a year of recovery and restoration for you thanks to God - hang in there for now though.

Hello! I'm 2 years in. I've been about 80% recovered for the last 3-4 months. Enough to go to work and enjoy holidays. I had severe symptoms for a year and a half, all kinds of pains, muscle spasms, horrible fatigue, bloating, mental slowness. Got rid of the supplements a few months in, since I felt they put an extra burden to my system. I worked through most of the time, except when I was in hospital for weeks at a time trying to figure out what's wrong. A few times I had such bad days that I felt like I was poisoned and about to die. Now I only have mild fatigue and intestinal issues. If I eat until I feel full or if I eat bad things, I get bloating, tiredness and a funny sensation in my belly. The best is to eat in moderation and not that often and to eliminate things that burden the digestive system and don't bring anything valuable (like sugar). Also, fresh food seeems to be the best, since the digestive system cannot handle aggression. I also avoid raw fruit and vegetables, I eat them boiled and in moderation. The worst thing is to eat 2 meals very close to each other and don't give time the first meal to digest, the new food will prevent the old food from getting digested and keep it where it shouldn't be for a long time. It's similar to eating spoiled food, since the food goes bad if it stays too long in the digestive system unable to be absorbed.

Thanks for your reply. It’s nice to hear from someone who has been through similar symptoms. I know exactly what you mean about feeling poisoned, I have said that on many occasions.
Thank you so much for your tips on how to eat, I must admit at the moment it is pot luck as to know how I’ll feel after eating!
I’m hoping soon I can shake this pain and I that will be my turning point.
I’m glad you are starting to feel a little better 😊

I've had my share of internet searches also, the first year and a half I spent a few hours a day just searching for wonder treatments, supplements, stories from others, even lengthy medical papers, I was desperate to find solutions, info, anything, and I made theories and scenarios based on them. When you feel extremely ill, the only thing you care for (when you you don't just vegetate) is to find a solution. You don't care about music, photography, relationships, work.
And it's not in our heads, muscle fasciculations after any effort was very visible. Also, the first month I had problems with my stool, gut lining coming out and even a bit of blood from the irritation sometimes. Didn't particularly take care of the digestive problems, since I had scarier things, like trembling, unbalance, muscle spasms and memory loss. The gut is the last to heal, I guess, at least for me. The throat infection (which was very nasty) was the first to go.

Hey Path,
It is good to see a post from you and your message just really hit home with me what an awful time you must have been through this past 2 years. It is good that you are seeing signs or recovery and I still believe you are going to get back to 100% or as near as, it's been a long road I know but you're going to fully get there and looking back to when I had the virus (12 years ago or so), how I felt after 2 years was much better but still quite fragile compared to another year or two down the line when I was even stronger again.
Thinking about you Path and you Ashley too, and hoping and praying for a good and settled period ahead, goodness knows you both deserve it. I still believe God is absolutely going to heal both of you completely, hang in there.
