Roller coaster and weight gain after hip replacement

Posted , 19 users are following.

Had hip replacement surgery 5 days ago. 53 years old.  Was fit before injury that caused arthritis and fast advancing arthritis 18 months ago. Gained 25 lbs.

Lost 20lbs and maintained weight loss for 3 months waiting for surgery. While very inactive.

Weighed myself and 5 lbs up on day 4 and same day 5.  Devastated and crying all the time.

Doing required exercises and eating okay foods. Sone chocolate, but no wine with pain meds.

Anyone experience this immediate weight gain.  And did it come off

Can’t stop feeling awful and depressed.  And gate asking for help with stuff.

Pain is minimal compared to before surgery. I should be happy.

Some of your weight gain might be water weight from IV fluids, also increased constipation due to inactivity and pain meds. Count out your total calories on EVERYTHING you eat before you eat it- until you are more active, stick with 1000-1200 total calories/day. Try pushing protein for healing- lo cal Greek yogurt, almonds ( but watch the amount- hi in calories), no processed foods or grains- when you’re trying to increase nutrition and decrease calories, breads and cereals are not the right temporary choice. If you feel hungry between nutritious meals, drink warm water and lemon juice. It will fill you up, Vit C is effective in healing

Thank you for that info. I am trying to be aware of calories as they do sneak up and appreciate the info on protein and the breads etc. As those are easy additions to meals and I need to be aware of the extra calories. I will start the warm lemon water. I have been drinking cold lemon water.

Hi Irishsuzyq! I am going thru similar ups and downs. I am almost a year post op my left THR and 7 months post op my right THR. My emotions are all over the place. No one prepares you for all the emotional lows that come after surgeries. What keeps me groundead is prayer and meditation and my 2yr.old grandson. I did put about 25 lbs. on and I have been slowly losing . I have great days of motivation and then days of why did I put my body through all this trauma. I have to believe the end result is to come more pain free days. As always please be patient and kind to yourself. Take the time you need. Blessings! Teresa

      Thanks Teresa

You have been through a lot.  I hope the end result for both of us will be great. I am way better then I was before surgery pain wise. And hope you get there as well. I will try and be more patient and kind with myself

I find it hard as my friends want to come help but my husband is not happy with people coming by to help or visit so it makes me feel more isolated

      Blessing back.

Tell your husband to jog on. What's more important your health and well being or the fact or him having to sod off for a couple of hours, so you can get stuff off your chest with your girlfriend's. it sounds like he don't really care if your better or not. What an arse.

      Completely agree with you, Karl.

Irish Suzy, explain to your husband that you really need your friends’ company and support at the moment. If he doesn’t want to be there when they visit, surely he can arrange to go to the pub or out with his mates for a while? He isn’t being very caring from the sound of it.

Experienced that - Yes, but it gets easier to take it back off again.

Going out tomorrow for a round of golf with a good friend, I couldn't have done that before the THR.

I found the static exercise bike was my friend to help me.

Your body craves  food to heal itself that's why we eat more, I am 9 weeks post op and still have an enormous appetite which I will feed , when we start walking and exercising it will drop off , just concentrate On building your strength up at the moment

Eating a high protein diet really seems to pay off and accelerates the healing process. The body really is miraculous.

Thank you.  I will start focusing on that.  The hospital doesn’t.  It’s all carb food.
