Rolling Hiatus Hernia Conflicting Results?
Posted , 7 users are following.
I have been suffering for a ver long time with Acid reflux symptoms and have tried many tblates with no joy. I am only 30 years old and of a normal BMI. I am otherwise fit and healthy. It has taken many years but due to progression of my syptoms : My astham getting worse, Pain in the abdomen and groin area and constant Nausea day in day out i was sent for an Endoscopy by my Suregon. I was then diganosed be the specialist that perfomed my endoscopy, with large rolling Hiatus Hernia. I then asked the specialist if i could try new medication to fix it and i was told no becasue of my age and sypmtoms he would write to my Consultant surgeon and suggest Surgery to fix it!
I was then sent for a CT scan 2 weeks later that came back clear with no abnormalities.
I am now stuck with all these worsening symptoms with taking svereal medications that do not help.
How can i be awake for my endoscopy, have pictures taken ( i also saw the report with my images ) measured and be told to be started on a stronger dose of Lanzoprol to now be told i dont have anything???
Please can someone help advice me as to what to do next? I feel like ive hit a brick wall!
If i wasnt having any worsning of symptoms and it was just my reflux ( diagnosed by my ENT specialist at another appointment 1 year ago), i would be happy that the CT showed nothing.
But now i have 2 differant results.
Please help??

Sorry to hear your Situation.
You need to keep phoning and badgering your gp and anyone else involved. I get the feeling that some doctors just want you out the door so they can move on to the next one.
Just tell them what you've said on here and explain everything. Don't take no for an answer.
I've had a hiatus hernia for a couple of years. Don't think mine is as bad as many people on here but it does get you down. I've been put on tablets for acid reflux but I never get acid reflux!!
Next visit to gp I'm going to Insist on a specialist. Just want to feel normal and fit again.
Keep calling and booking more appointments.
Good luck

Yes i get that feeling too. I feel now that they have one report that shows nothing they are disregarding the internal investigation of an endoscopy that showed this Rolling hernia!
Yes you must insist on tests and maybe go down the route of an endoscopy to see if there is anything else going on inside.
Thank you for your reply its just nice to know i am not alone with my symptoms.
I will try and get to see my GP again as i still can not understand how it is medically possible to be told i have a rolling hiatus hernia ( with many differant symptoms) then for it to just disapear on a CT scan, or so to speak.
Thank you once again.
I do hope you get sorted too.

Ive had recurrent laryngitis and chest infections in the last year (resulting in Intensive care last year as this caused my asthma to take a bad turn and also this year due to another chest infection which again had aggravated my asthma).
Last at year I had an endoscopy which found a sliding hiatus hernia, GORD and esophogitis. I am now struggling with my breathing which isn't my asthma but is pressure every time I eat. I think my hernia has got bigger because of the constant full feeling and breathlessness.
I have a really good respiratory nurse who is referring me to a respiratory consultant who deals with issues with the gut. I hope to see this doctor ASAP and will let you know. As Steven has said, don't give up. You know your own body and know when things aren't right. If you don't get anywhere on the NHS you could always pay a one off fee to see a private consultant who could then treat you on the NHS.
I just wish there were more doctors that could recognise our problem and how acid affects breathing.
Good luck and take care.

I was diagnosed with a 3cm sliding hiatus hernia a few months ago. I was gien lanzoprozole but this doesn't seem to help. I still suffer with anything from mild discomfort to severe discomfort & pain. My breathing is also affected, I feel like I'm struggling to breathbut tests on my lungs & heart are normal. I am finding it really hard to get anyone to agree that an HH can cause this much discomfort but I'm still pushing! I know how anyone feels with this, doctors don't seem to agree with the extent of problems it can cause. I have been to A&E 4 times in the last 8 months!

Follow the advice of a "dirty ol' man" (me).
Don't trust any doctor. They are only in for the money. But you need good insurance. Then go on the Internet and find a good doctor who is associated with hospitals and has been in practice for 10+ years. You need to find a general surgeon who has done at least 100 to 200 hiatus/hiatal hernia surgeries. Google "hiatal hernia" and go through the findings. I am sorry to tell you but it is hard work. Do it!! Get educated in your problem. Don't expect God's help if you don't help yourself. Google the name of the doctor. Look at his/her bio. (qualifications). Don't let yourself to become an experimental object to an inexperienced doctor. Ask the surgeon's nurse how many hiatal hernia surgeries he has done.
Learn all you can.

Keep on push push pushing Doctors!
I too have been suffering with reflux for the past 18months - I take Esomaprazole and Domperidone and still experience chest pain every single day - doesn't seem to make any difference what I eat! Up until all this started I was fit and active - loved walking/hiking yoga and swimming. I have seen so many Doctors- some NHS and some private, had umpteen tests including 3 Endoscopies, barium swallow, blood tests and CT scan - I could write a book!! as a result of all this my second endoscopy showed a small hiatus hernia and some inflammation but third endoscopy and barium swallow showed nothing! no inflammation or hernia!
And so on it goes - I have another appointment in March with a gastroenterologist.
At my wits end!
Best wishes,
Lynne

Many thanks for your advice i will try to kepe pushing the doctors. Can i ask, when you went for your 3rd Endoscopy which showed no hernia did they explain to you why the first one did show one and why didnt didnt the 3rd time??
I am trying to understand why one report would show up a Large rolling hiatus hernia which i was told at the time would need surgery due to all my symptoms. Then to be told there is northing on a CT scan afterwards?
I am a little confused! :0(
I too have another appontment 1 day before i fly to mexico in in 4 weeks time! I was hoping i might have been able to be on some tablets that would allow me to eat food without having pain or nausea. I am currently taking: Omeprazole, Buscopan, danitadine and montelukast for my worse astma symptoms. As well as my steriod inhaler.
I just want to be able to exercise without getting pain or wheezing too.
I hope you get sorted and lkeep us all posted.
Best wishes
Jenny

After the barium swallow I was told if the hernia was small it may not show - but you have been told you have a large hiatus hernia. I am confused too, as I said, I could write a book!! Something is causing all this Doctors just haven't found out what.
Buscopan just made the whole thing worse for me.
I really sympathise - it would be such a relief to be free of pain.
Good luck and keep in touch.
Best wishes,
Lynne

i am am currently waiting to see another respiratory doctor who deals with the stomach too. I have been suffering for over a year with reflux which has affected my asthma, caused chest infections and landed me in intensive care last year. I am currently taking lansoperazole and ranatidine. I also have Gaviscon advance (which is only available on prescription). I also take several meds for my asthma and have just come out of hospital after a week in due to a chest infection and asthma. I'm now suffering again with my hiatus hernia (which they discovered last year after my massive attack). My respiratory nurse is really good and she is convinced the acid is causing my breathing problems which is good to know someone actually believes it happens. She is also referring me to another consultant and if either of you want to know his name when I find out I will post it on here. He is based in Hull.
Last night my husband wanted me to go back to hospital because my breathing was terrible. I decided today that I've got to try and eat smaller meals because every time I eat I get so breathless, pain in my chest, and feel really unwell. I had a tiny amount of cereal this morning then had some chicken soup for dinner. I then had an apple with a small amount of cheese and so far so good. I love my food so much and it's really hard because I'm still on steroids which makes me hungry but I'm sucking on fruit polos so I don't keep eating. I know I can't do this forever but I do feel much better for eating really small amounts. Every time I do eat I have 2 spoons of Gaviscon which does really help.
Good do luck to both of you.

I think I gave you bad information about the number of surgeries in repairing hiatus/hiatal hernia repair. The number is between 200 and 400.If he did that many he should have an idea of the problematic post-op reasons.
