Rolling hiatus hernia - what next?

Posted , 4 users are following.

I have been taking 20mg Omeprazole for a few years now. I was put on it because I had constant heartburn. In January I was diagnosed with a 10cm para oesophagal hiatus hernia and reflux oesophagitis. I never saw the Gastroenterologist again because when all biopsies were back there was nothing untoward, so I never got the chance to ask him about this.

Symptoms - some pain just under bust to right and left, some reflux but not too bad, feel full quickly but still hungry, feel bloated and i burp a lot. The worst thing is bending over because i am nearly sick. I am sure i will be one day.

I would have thought with a hernia that big i would have an operation and especially with it being the uncommon one which could cause complications. When I mentioned this to my doctor all she said was that they didn't operate very often on these.

Could someone give me some advice please on what I should do.

    Hi Jayne

I have a 3 cm sliding Hiatus Hernia, also suffer from reflux and the same symptoms as you.

In your case I know that it is classed as an emergency with your type of HH.

So would get a second option.

I am going for a third option in a couple of weeks time as being on anti-acid drugs for the rest of your life is not good especially these Portion Pump Inhibitors we are on.

    Good Luck

Hi Jane and Dave, I also have a sliding hernia and my life is a misery! For 2 years now I have been back and forth to hospital!. They won't operate because they say it's not the hernia giving me pain!!!. I have terrible heartburn every day, I have pain under my right rib and through to my shoulder blade, my whole diaphragm feels like it's going to explode and I'm so bloated it's embarrassing!!!. No ppi's have worked for me, I can hardly eat anything. Got a breath test in London soon to see if there is bacteria inside that shouldn't be there and a lactose intolerance test. After this they said sorry, nothing else we can do! I can't wear a bra without it really hurting and my stools are yellow!!! Something is so not right inside :-(

Hi Jayne, Dave and Lesley, The Doctor did not give me a size on my hiatal hernia, just said it was very large. It was in my chest and was keeping the flap open in my esophagus. Therefore when I tried to lay down (my mattress was at an angle) all the acid in my stomach would come up into my esophagus, it would burn so bad it was like battery acid. That part of it started within the last year. I have had acid reflux for almost 20 years and tried everything. Last November I had the scope done, it had been about 6 years since I had it done, The hernia was very large at this point and I had Barrett's esophagus. It has been 5 weeks, I haven't had heartburn but I feel a little nauseated at times. Good luck to you all and I hope you get some relief.

Hi all, it is good to see I am not the only one suffering. I have also got discomfort under my ribs, everyday has become a challenge for me. I am only taking a PPI every second day as the side effects from these drugs, dizziness, blurring (computer work), nausea.

I have lost weight (stress as well I suppose) due to trying to adjust my diet to cut out all the things I used to eat, spicy food, fried food etc.

For the bloating if you try to cut out all wheat products, breads etc. this has helped for the bloating.

    Good Luck.
