Rotator Cuff Surgery-4 weeks post-op

Posted , 82 users are following.

First two weeks after surgery the pain was intense and I could not sleep unless I was in a recliner. Have been wearing the immobilized  but have a tendency to remove it when I know that there is no risk of injury. I do wear it at night but find I can't sleep good because I am not a back sleeper. If I try sleeping on my side with a pillow under my arm my shoulder hurts more. My other problem is that I am 4 weeks post-op and I can only do 2/3 passive exercises. The one where you hold the wrist of your bad arm and raise it above your head is impossible! I can only raise it to my waist because of the pain. My surgeon told me I have to do it! Easy for him to say! Any advice would be helpful. By the way, at this point my pain is manageable with extra strength Tylenol and Tylenol PM's at night. It sounds as if that will all change when I start P.T. !

I am 1 week after surgery. I am not in pain very much, And not taking any pain meds including ibuprofen. I’d like to sharing my experience with others. I started passive movement of my shoulder after I returned  to home the same day of surgery.  I did little bit everyday. I have my arm in sling all day long even when I am sleeping.  Move  my fingers and elbow few times a day when my arm is in sling.  I feel pretty good after 1 week out of rotator cuff repair, and biceps tenotomy surgery.  I can get my arm up over my head( only passive motion).  I am  doing the passive exercise 3 times day. I know the recovery is hard . I just want to share my experience, hope can help other people to recovery quickly and efficiently.

1 week and you can put your  arm over your head?

I find that hard to believe.... sorry

WOW.   Does your surgeon know you are doing this?   My surgeon and PT couldn't emphasize enough not to move my shoulder.  I can bend my arm  at the elbow and move the lower part of my arm, but  that shoulder should stay still.  I'm afraid you could tear the sutures.  Please be very very careful and do what your surgeon says.  He/she has the education and experience.

       Grammie- I think it’s a fake post.....

No way could anyone lift their arm with that type of invasive surgery that soon. Plus zero pain? Nope...

Mine still won’t go over my head at 8 weeks and my PT said this is normal!

You don’t have to believe it, but it is true. I am still have problem get my arm straight up over my head, but from front and side, I don’t have  problems. I can pull my arm all the way up close  to 180 degree. Hope you are here watching itsmile or if I can load a photo. I will.

Thank you for your advice. I was an athlete and this is my second shoulder surgery. I did my first one 20 years ago with only bone spur, my surgeon also told me ASA I woke up I needed to hanging my arm towards the ground and move like  clock.  I will have my first appointment with my doctor next Tuesday, but I will Keep doing what I have been doing. Hopefully I did not tear anything. Remember, when you feel the pain then you need to stop, each day a little bit higher. Hope that helps.

AGAIN: ONLY with possive motion in first few days and first few weeks, if you use active motion you WILL RETEAR IT. If you stay no movement, you have a big percentage to get frozen shoulder later on in your life. This is just my experience. You also should do more researches as well. Good luck!!

I will keep everyone posted after I pass each week for 8 weeks.

Well this is my 3rd surgery on my shoulder.  The first 2 times I was a smart ass and did pretty much what I wanted also and I paid the price.  So I have a lot of experience in recovery.  This time I am 6 weeks post op.  I have kept my shoulder very still.  Yesterday was my 1st day of PT, no frozen shoulder or even close.  It is a slow steady recovery.   BTW after the 2nd surgery, it failed within weeks and I didn't know it.  I could move my shoulder above my head and had no pain.   About 6 months later my shoulder started to really hurt.  Had an MRI which showed a complete rupture and the tendon was retracted and useless.  Yet I could move my arm above my head.  The doctor couldn't explain it, except to say my trap and deltoid muscles must be very strong.  Just saying, maybe your tolerance for pain is high and you don't feel what you are doing to your shoulder.  Unfortunately it will catch up.  Missing a tendon (I was missing 2) is a disaster waiting to happen.  Your shoulder will not be stable and arthritis will set in big time.  If you are for real, I encourage you to check with your surgeon and do what he/she says.

I called couple time to my doctors office. His RN told me as long as in passive motion and stop at the uncomfortable point, I should be fine. Just do not push it to hard. I am not sure what is exactly right thing to do. I just feel good 1 week out. Try to give my point of recovery. I think everybody is different and you have to listen to your body and your doctor.  Time always tell us right or wrong.

BTW, my first surgery, and recovery were very successful.  I did not have any problem for 20 years until I fail twice from stairs and while I was skiing. Torn my infrasprintus tendon completely. Of course, I will be more careful after I read your reply. Thanks.

Maybe that's the difference.  I tore my bicep and Supraspinitus.   Those tendons have different jobs.  Just be careful.  I'm afraid you are not feeling the pain but could be doing the damage like I did.

There is a saying and I am not trying to be rude, but just because you can doesn't mean you should.I am 10 months out and just now I am having some pain. It is a very hard recovery, please be careful.

I am not trying to be rude. Just try to share and help. you don’t have to do anytime we are discussing. You have you own judgement and  should do what you believe.

I will not continue post my recovery anymore. Good luck with everybody!!

We sound like We are at the same stage in our recovery. I did too much in the last few weeks and had some pain. Scared me. As I said before I was cutting bushes using loppers and I was blaming the tool for not being sharp enough as I had to squeeze very hard to cut. Maybe it's my muscle strength! Anyway, as you said it's a long recovery and one shouldn't get over confident just because you're feeling better. How is it feeling now?

The first post that person put up, “Dana“ Sounded fake to me. First they said they only had “rotator cuff surgery”, said they were in no pain a week later and could raise the arm above their head. With grammar  errors.  Then this person went on a second post to say, they actually had bicep surgery with it & had this surgery , 20 years ago too, and this is their second surgery. Then they taunted my post saying “look can you see me I’m moving my arm 180°“ with silly adolescent emoji‘s.

My guess is this Dana person is probably an adolescent that likes to troll these kinds of sites to make up things and make people feel worse. I’ve heard of it happening & they’re  usually just bored. There is no way anybody could have this kind of surgery that this person discussed and be able to move their arm above their head in one week and have absolutely zero pain. It is virtually impossible. I reported them hopefully they’ll just go away. It sounds like they might.

It is still sore, but what's interesting is I did yard work also, trimming trees and bushes,we must be surgery twins!

I totally agree with you!  There is no way, absolutely no way you could move your arm like that on the day of surgery.   I thought maybe it was Raymond re-appearing.  haha

Ha ha oh my gosh.... Raymond. That’s funny, but you could be correct!

I'll be 11 months on April 9. My neck is still achy and my bicep. But, thinking back my neck and shoulder have always been achy. Since I was in my twenties. I'm 66. I have to get over it and quit looking for the worst. Bottom line, do your exercises, and remember to be careful. Amazing how long this takes. I did this damage 6 mos before surgery so maybe that contributes. I did buy a 40lb bag of dog food (carefully) so maybe it is improving. I'm being paid back by my own motto - Patience is a virtue!

Christine-  check with your physical therapist. But my physical therapist told me to roll against a wall with a lacrosse ball in my armpit, wing bone area, & also under my neck & down under my wing bone by my spine. I do that sometimes 10 times a day to loosen the muscles.  When those muscles all get tight they pull on the rotator cuff and vice a versa. That will loosen your neck.

This comment is going to sound so obvious, but I really believe the weather affects the achiness. I've been rereading all these posts and remembering how I had very little pain months ago. Now the arm is very achy. But we've had very cold damp weather the last month or so. Yesterday was sunny and the arm was pretty good. Today grey and damp and very achy. I'm in California mountains so my apologies to those in the rest of the country who really suffer thru winter months. We have nothing to compare with your winters! Anyway maybe warmer weather will bring relief. I'm almost a year out.

Yes Christine I believe you’re correct. When we have a lot of fog or cloud cover I notice I’m a little more achy. I also live in California, Santa Barbara, and we’ve been having some really strange weather as well. But I noticed when it’s foggy and damp I’m a little more achy.

That makes me feel better. I was getting nervous. I went to college in Santa Barbara about 100 years ago so I do understand your weather!

A couple of days ago a big friendly dog knocked me flat! I managed to land on my non operated side but now it's all achy. I have turned into the biggest most fearful baby. I've also started doing the ROM stretches again. Makes me sore. I guess that's good. I've only been doing the strengthening exercises. Almost a year since surgery. I want my old self back!!

    • Posted

Oh my gosh that must be scary but you’re probably a key because you need to do more stretching? Have you talk to the doctor recently. A year is a long time so sorry . 😪

It'll all be fine. I just wanted to share with people that understand. The doctor released me months ago and honestly unless something bad happens I'm not going back!

We are surgery twins, a few weeks ago I fell in the garage, luckily on my other shoulder.I have issues now with that shoulder before the fall. I sure hope it doesn't get worse. I am going in next week for an MRI on my left wrist. I've tried 2 shots, but it is very swollen and painful. If I have to have surgery it won't be near as bad as the shoulder. And I'm sure this is more than you care to know. LOL

That's not good news. Since my tree cutting episode and friendly dog fall I have been nothing but very achy. It been cold and damp. Yesterday I sat with ice and heat. Today it's 80 degrees and it barely aches. Makes no sense. Even driving which usually bothers me. I drive 100 miles twice a week. I'm relieved but worried that the cold will always be a problem. This should give you some hope for your shoulder. Is your other shoulder bothering you as well as the wrist?
