Rotator Cuff Surgery-4 weeks post-op

Posted , 82 users are following.

First two weeks after surgery the pain was intense and I could not sleep unless I was in a recliner. Have been wearing the immobilized  but have a tendency to remove it when I know that there is no risk of injury. I do wear it at night but find I can't sleep good because I am not a back sleeper. If I try sleeping on my side with a pillow under my arm my shoulder hurts more. My other problem is that I am 4 weeks post-op and I can only do 2/3 passive exercises. The one where you hold the wrist of your bad arm and raise it above your head is impossible! I can only raise it to my waist because of the pain. My surgeon told me I have to do it! Easy for him to say! Any advice would be helpful. By the way, at this point my pain is manageable with extra strength Tylenol and Tylenol PM's at night. It sounds as if that will all change when I start P.T. !

Am at week 5 and life is returning to normal. Very similar to my last 3 rotator cuff surgeries. (don't ask, my fault)

Am sleeping with a body pillow and no sling. During the day....no pain! It takes a little bit of time

    Hi

It can take 12mths to be back to any semblance of normal and pain is normal. It takes a lot of physio for the return of your range of movement (rom)and it is up to how hard u work at the exercises on how much rom u get back. However, after injury and repair u may never get full rom. The physio exercises will work better for your pain than meds when it comes to chronic pain ie pain that lasts for longer than 6 mths.

It is very early days for u and I know the pain u are going through, I had both shoulders reconstructed. My left is what I consider 100% but my right never got back to "normal" and I suffer from migraines brought on by my shoulder and neck muscles. I got lazy and stopped all exercise but I had my right operated on in 2006.

Yep 11 yrs later and it causes me grief. However, that is due to not seeking immediate treatment and I continued to do heavy lifting at work with a full thickness tear. By the time I did have it operated on my right arm was hanging about 4cm longer than my left.

Just keep doing your exercises and before long your rom will improve smile

Thanks for the encouragement and information. I have just never had any medical issues I didn't bounce back from. I'm a little hardheaded but I'm gonna do as I told this time.

I am 13 weeks post op from a full thickness tear and bone spur removal. Been back swimming since about week nine , very gently at first and have just done half a mile of  steady front crawl. Felt a little tender but ok.

first couple of months after the op were very unpleasant with lots of pain and minimal sleep but gradually it has all come together and I am delighted as I was in pain for a good few months before the surgery. Now have nearly full ROM and am starting to get some strength back in the shoulder.

This feedback is intended for those in a bad place, don't get too despondent, just follow your medical advice and it will come good in the end

Have had this surgery 3 times.  The path was different each time but the results were alwys the same.  Pain free and full range of motion.  it just takes time and patients!

How long does it usually take? And I'm sure I'm not the first person to ask but why so many times? So many people saw me in my sling and said they have had 3 surgery, and one guy was going on number 5. I am almost 4 months post op on my right shoulder and i go for the same surgery on my left in 2 weeks, full thickness tear they are putting anchors in and re attaching. But I still have a lot of pain in my right shoulder.

Have had this surgery 3 times (don't ask). Recovery was different each time but results were always the same. Full range of motion and no pain. Give it time. All will be fine

It might depend on how much surgery was done.......no matter what it will get better with time

I am now one of the veterans who had shoulder

surgery for a full tendon tear after four years of frozen shoulder. They had to manipulate me under anaesthetic. It is now nearly two years gone by and,I am much happier now but still have to not push myself too far. I was off work for 16 months which drove me insane as I have always been a very active person. I am also a single mother so was severely challenged.i never thought I would go through this but I did. 😎

I had the surgery a year ago. Two inch tear with 2 wicked bone spurs on my right shoulder. It took 6 full months to get full range and no pain to happen. Don't give up. It is worth all the pain because now I literally have no pain.

No im about to have tennis elbow surgery on my left. Major tears away from the bone. I'm hoping this surgery is nowhere near as painful but recovery time looks like the same.

all of you going thru the rotator cuff surgery and recovery, I wish you all the best. Keep the faith that it will get better. It just takes time.

i just had the shoulder surgery 3 weeks ago.   i also had both elbows done several years ago.  They were a breeze compared to my shoulder.  Much faster recovery.   Good luck!!

I am a 61 year old lady. I had the SAD operation together with the Rotator-cuff tear. My tear was double thickness, about 4cm. I had OPEN SURGERY (leaving me with a neat, straight scar on the top of my shoulder). RECOVERY: the pain was intense for the first few weeks bothering me through the night. I slept propped up in bed with four pillows for 12 weeks. The SURGEON told me NOT TO wear the sling. The PHYSIO NURSE told me TO WEAR the sling. The NURSE advised that wearing the sling helps by giving CONSTANT support whilst HEALING so there is LESS PAIN EXPERIENCED. The SURGEON was confident with his surgery on my shoulder, fixing with a SCREW into the Humerus and double sutures. USING my arm, I am told - keeping it moving gently, saves it from a build up of SCAR TISSUE and possibly of a FROZEN shoulder, but this does cause MORE PAIN. So, I decided to mix it up by doing a little of both. ALWAYS SLING ON around strangers whilst out and about. Making sure people were aware to be careful around me. Good Pain relief on hand helped too. PHYSIO : I did this carefully EVERY DAY for 12 weeks, anything from 10 to 45 mins to music. I was advised STRETCHING the arm gently and slowly NOT USING MUSCLES - and PENDULUM excerises were the first ones to do. I used bands, a pully and stick separately to gain movement. I did ALL THE excerises shown to me each day. AFTER 12 WEEKS - I HAVE FULL RANGE 😃 I have been signed off ? further physio appointments. I'm slowly and gently building STRENGTH now. I am NOT in any of pain I experienced - which was intense (8 - 10) in those first weeks. IT DOES GET BETTER. I'm feeling (1-3) at 14/15 WEEKS. So WORK THE PHYSIO it's worth it. I wish you all a good recovery. KIND WISHES ?😊

Did you ever have a time when you felt your shoulder had regressed?  Mine was great at 6 week exam but now the PT is causing a lot of pain. I now have “abduction” which I had at times before surgery but was fine for a while after.

I'm just at 5weeks after full thickness rotator cuff and torn bicep surgery. UGH!! Starting PT today, should I ask for more Or stronger pain Meds? On Norco 7.5 now, works pretty good for about 4 hours and then I have to take another.

HI. It will get better. The pain after PT isn't dramatically different than before. Just some new aches. Be sure and ice. I think you have to get used to the pain. You're at a rough spot now. I'm at over 5 months and still achy but not enough to use pain meds. Well, maybe but they cut you off after awhile. The current climate over opiods makes it hard for the docs to prescribe. Starting PT is hard. It's hard to believe it's your arm hanging there! I think the meds you have should be fine. That and patience! Good luck and keep in touch.

Hi, OMG poor you - biceps too. Yes, ask for more/ or better meds to help with pain issues. You then have the option to take or not. Ice before physio and 20 minutes or after physio - so blood flow for muscle healing repair takes place. If ice is placed straight away this inhibits repair. Physio every day 10-30 mins is vital for acceleration of healing. At 14 weeks doing this, I had FULL RANGE OF MOVEMENT - and 80 percent strength (after S.A.D. rotator-cuff PP8 SURGERY). Wishing you a speedy recovery too⚘

Sorry, typo !! PP8 should be deleted ... and '20 minutes or SO after physio....' my fingers are too chubby for replying on my phone. - Be well soon all ?

I'm sorry David. So it's PT now? They offered me that before the surgery. How did you know it failed?

      Massive pain one day

      MRI confirmed

PT i did after the fail but it just flares it up. Going to let it heal for another six months
