rough night

Well this has not happened for awhile but last night was bad for whatever the reason my knee went into screw you mode. I could not get comfortable toss and turned and finally 4 am I got up the pain was bad enough I took 2 pain pills ( 4mg of Dilaudid ) now its 5am and it feel better. I am guessing today is going to be a rough one. The nurse comes by to check my blood because of the PICC line around 830ish and the therapist on or about same time frame. Then this afternoon I see the surgeon and the infection specialist fingers crossed everything is okay. My biggest concern is keeping the pain at a reasonable level I know narcotics are helpful but lets face it look at how many get addicted to them. Hopefully he can offer some suggestions other wise life is not going to pleasant.

Hi yes I think it’s normal let’s face it before the op we where running around dealing with daily living family’s jobs etc and now all we think about is our knees op the pain the discomfort and why we can’t more we are not burning our  Energy  Up so the brain can’t cut off and reminds us of the pain I don’t have the answer but we will all  get there I’m sure

      Stay strong keep positive

I have the same problem every night, toss and turn. Wake up every 3 hours now. I am 12 weeks post op , leg not completely straight so lying on back not comfortable. I also have lower back pain, sciatica so lying on sides not comfortable.I take a pain pill hydromorphone 2 mg. Before bedtime if my knee is aching.I used to worry about getting addicted but I need to control pain and eventually find I need less. I still ice after home exercising and physiotherapist helps with my back and knee for Rom. Try to keep ahead of the pain and take meds when needed, eventually you will find you will need meds not every 4 hours but 6 to 8 hours. I take my meds when I go for physio as she really pushes me for that Rom. Hope you will get good news and everything will get better.

Dr.'s appt. went well. It only takes 20 minutes to get there but boy am I so not ready to drive very far I was in tears at the Dr's office. He said the longer I take pain meds the longer I will be in pain he told me to look up Opiod Induced Hyper alsomething? The idea was the longer your on pain meds the body will get addicted to the meds and whether you really are in pain or not the body will make it seem you are just to get the meds. I told him there is no doubt in my mind I will be in some form of pain period my only goal is to feel a little better. It is going to take 6 months or better before I feel better which stinks but as of right now considering all I have been thru I am okay. He took out 120cc's of fluid which helped and he asked me how I was doing with pain meds and I told him at first it was 2 4mg of Hydromorphone every 6 hours ( I was up to 6 a day ) now even though it hurts like a sob I am down to 3 a day I told him in my 20's I would have wanted them for the effect now I really do not want to take anything I just do not want to be in pain. HE ended up writing another script for pain I have enough for 45 days if I take 4 a day hopefully by then I will be feeling better. I am just so done with feeling like garbage daily.

It is sad when we have to count our pills for our pain. I was given 2 4mg of hydromorphone in the hospital at time of surgery and I had a bad reaction. I was having hallucination and having meltdowns crying episodes. I take 1 2mg of same meds now. I am given 40 tablets for 10 days, and have to refill before I run out eg: count the pills because my doctor takes a few days to send it to my pharmacy.I worry my doctor may not renew each time. I see my family doctor on July 31 for my back sciatica and I am also on a nerve pill pregabalin 75 mg one capsule twice a day when needed. I was on this before surgery as I had sciatica down my right hip leg. But the surgery was my left knee and now have both sides and lower back.I keep taking my pain meds but longer intervals now. Down to 3 or 4 a day. I keep track of date and time and if it is a day of physio I might take one before and after. I can see I am cutting back and so is my pain. Try to take one 4mg every four hours and take the pill just when you start to feel it aching . Keep ahead of the pain. It will subside.

Hello I’m so sorry you are in so much pain I feel for you

I think it’s bad that the doctors do not give us the pain medication that we need they are not the one in pain it is us and they need to understand that I remember watching the clock go around thinking when is it time for my next one

At the moment My knee feels like it hasn’t had the operation because the pain is unbearable I see my consultant on Thursday and I will be telling him so and if he does not like it he can put me on to somebody else

Stay strong keep positive you will get there but if you’re like me you’re just a patient

I thought my situation stunk on top of dealing with a replacement knee you also have to deal with sciatica nerve pain a double whammy yuck!! What I think is worse you have to count your pills ( lots of trust there?? ) What really bugs me there are some ( like us ) who need pain meds due to a surgery or current condition like your nerve pain and the pain we feel is real and it hurts a lot but to get something to help it takes in act of God at times. Here is what I don't like there are others that get pain meds who really have no use for them and nobody questions why?? Yes there was a time in my 20's I would have enjoyed the effects of the meds now I hate it my only concern is to try and minimize the pain. At least now that I rcvd another script when I start outpatient therapy I will be able to take something prior and it will not be as rough.

Thank you yes the pain does decrease but meds give me other issues. Take meds for stomach, and constipation. Some times I feel I never get a break. I wish the range of motion would increase, I know it will take time.

The meds will help with physio as I know my therapist tries to push me. She said when it feels like 7 out 10 she slowly stops, and then repeats. As some meds state on the prescription bottle may cause constipation. This is other issue I am dealing with. Good luck with physio.

Someone told me years ago better living thru modern chemistry? It sounds stupid but look at whats out there you name there is a pill lotion syrup for just about everything. Your therapist stops when you reach a 7 lately my pain level on average is a 7. My view of the infamous pain scale is slightly different here goes: 10 you were involved horrible car accident not long for this world 8 to 9 your our of surgery and the meds they had you on while in surgery have wore off. 7 this is the highest I will ever give my pain while at home trust me 7 is zero fun!! 6 if only I could get down to a 6 life would be better. 5 I would love it anything else considering the surgeries I have had doubtful.

I am 12 weeks post surgery and I was at 9 to 10 in hospital. I complained the meds were not even taking the edge off and was told they will not take all the pain away. I thought that is what pain meds is for. I am having problems with range of motion, I am at 80 and my sciatica is causing lack of range. I am almost at full extension. I used to think when is pain going to decrease and I always felt down. It will get better and everyone's pain threshold is different. Don't focus on the number. Get ahead of the pain, take meds when you first feel some discomfort. I did this and gradually I am feeling in control.
