Round 2

i have had a wonderful holiday in Corfu. Go home Monday. Then have my appointment with the surgeon to find out if my left hip needs repair or replacement. It's been three months since my right THR. But I need to get back into that frame of mind for my next op. Think I'm more scared this time than I was last.

As I thought everything was fine until I spoke to people about my right hip and as I got to talk found out that there scar was three inches. now I'm gutted as my scar is nine inches. How come?

Then everyone seems to be recovering quicker than I have. So all of this is going through my head. What if what ifs.

    good morning Heather -

I know what you mean - right now I am waiting to go to the hospital to have my 2nd (left) hip done - first one was in March 2015 - It seems as if I am more nervous for this one and not sure why ....

please don't compare yourself to others - not scar wise or recovering time - who knows what the real story is ... seriously ...

be gentle with your self -

You are you, and not anyone else so do not compare except in a general way. Scars vary, surgeons vary. On a practice level I have often wondered if a 6 ft surgeon with large hands needs to make a larger incision than a smaller person with small hands?

Hi I think it depends on which operation you have, all the scars in UK seem to be the Anterior...Not sure...but there are three different routes, this new Superpath way seems to have the shortest scar, but in UK they dont seem to do it that way yet.

I think they go in like slicing up a Melon, just a little on the ends getting deeper as they get towards the joint, but it really does not matter, as once you have both done you will be pain free, and able to walk again, I was still beaten by a lady with a pram yesterday afternoon in town, but I am getting about so much better now than I was in March before the operations....Ian.

I'm back to work almost back to normal I think just a couple of things I find difficult but getting there. Monday is the day I find out when I get my next op. Funny but I'm more scared this time around than last. I know the finished result will been pain free but in the men time I will be back to square one and I have not lost the weight I put on after the first op so I'm going to be even bigger.

I was so fit and now I can see the pounds pilling on.

Sorry not what you want to here.

Thanks for your reply and I will let you know what happens.

    hi heather

don't compare yourself with others but just think how far you have come and how the pain has gone. A friend of mine had her hip done and her recovery was slower than mine but purely down to fact her hip had been in worse position than mine and I had mine done earlier . There can be many reasons but the end result is the same and the time it takes doesn't matter we all reach same goal. you could find second one is quicker recovert this time as may be operated earlier. don't worry go for it until you have both done you won't be perfect. I am having my 2nd done 5 October 4 months since first one. Just look forward,

    good luck Maggie x

    Hi Heather.

Enjoy the rest of your time in Corfu. Holidays go so quickly don't they?

Try not to compare yourself with others. Everyone is different. There is probably a good reason why scars etc are different but we have to trust that the surgeons know what they're doing.

Good of luck with your appointment, keep us all updated.

    Hi heather,

'if only' life wasn't full of 'what ifs'. I'm sure life would be a much easier ride! I personally am one of life's worriers, and I find myself trying to cross my bridge before I've come to it so even though I knew how well I came through op number 1, and how lovely it was to be pain free, I still looked for negatives for my second op. You know what though, when I really gave myself a shake, I realised that there weren't any negatives, none at all!  Yes I knew I was going to have discomfort for a few days but the pain each day was no worse than the pain I lived with every single day with the duff hip, and that pain was eventually going to take me to a better place. It's like childbirth, you know you are going to have pain, but you know that pain will end and bring with it something wonderful. This op is no different 😊

Talk to us and see if we can't help you stay positive on the run up to surgery. I'm sure we can.

    Take care.

    Well Monday is the day.

30th may I had a hip replacement and I am back to work full time almost back to normal. The only things I can not do yet is up the ladders and getting down on my honkers but apart from that black to normal.

not out the woods yet Monday I see my consultant to find out when I get my next op on the other hip. Repair or a hole hip replacement. My MRI came back with looks like I'm on the way to a hip replacement so will find out Monday.

    How am I feeling?

Well more scared this time and I feel I have just got back on my feet and back to work a job I love then I'm going back to square one.

My left hip it been playing up for the past few days so if I think the worst then everything else will be a blessing.

    dear heather,

welcome back  ... maybe not .... it seems that you have done really well after your 1st THR - I am so sorry to hear that now your other hip is playing up ..

Can you imagine how it will be when you have 2 new hips ????

I am now 7 weeks post-op of 2nd THR - I still don;t understand why I freaked out, but hey, that is what I did , so be it ...

I finally feel that I am recovering for real - no other hip that is bothering me - both are getting stronger - sloooooooowwwww - but then I was never painfree for so long and except for the occasional discomfort and muscle pain etc. I am now ...

let us know what decision is made okay -

    big warm hug
