Rubber Band Ligation, no Sedation. Can you drive yourself home right after?

Hello, I may be having my hemorrhoids banded and I wanted to cover all bases. I know everyone is different, but should I be able to drive myself home after this procedure or is the discomfort too unbearable? I just have no idea what to expect. Any responses appreciated. Thanks!

I had banding last Wednesday, i had my wife with me,but probably could've drove. Its more of a discomfort rather than pain. Take acetaminophen before the procedure. It took 4 days for the bands to fall off. Definitely expect more blood after they fall off,and until everything heals. Each day is better, and i cant wait till im 100%. I had some minor skin dryness back there, but other than that, hopefully good next week.

no you should not. why are you doing that . just have the surgry i did as of 1 year today i,m doing super and great, your sore for about a week and after that it gets better each day

No , you can't drive let alone sit after rubber band ligation i have done 4 rubber band ligation so far the pain was soo excruciating that i cannot sit/stand . They will apply some drug before ligation so the part they are about to band will be numb but the numbness will go away in 5 min .

Yikes! I'm confused by this since most people have said it's uncomfortable, but not really painful.

    hey carissa,

ive had it done twice and drove myself home after. wasn't given any gas/sedative at all. Pain was as high as a 5 max. Mostly discomfort and pressure, kind of just felt like when the hems would flare up and be uncomfortable. Mild discomfort using the bathroom but just make sure you are doing as much as you can to keep stools soft. Discomfort from the banding only lasted a few days. You will be fine! Just follow your surgeons instructions. You should be able to drive yourself and they would let you know before hand if you can't. Good luck! 😃

Hi Carissa , I've had that done without sedation three times now . It didn't work for me , but it may for you . However other than the discomfort of getting it done , there was no pain at all , and I drove myself not only home , but back to work .

I had three bandings done a couple of days ago. I had no sedation so was advised I could drive but took my wife along just in case. I have had two previous banding sessions and they have been so painful, there was no way I could drive. I mentioned this to the doctor and he said they must have done the procedure incorrectly as there are no nerves in the banding area. He assured me that he would do it correctly and there would be no pain, and he was correct! I did have pain for other reasons, but that's another story. I would recommend taking a soft cushion to sit on for your journey home,

Thanks for your reply, What did you feel with the bandings the past couple days? Pressure and cramping ?

Haven't really had any problems with the bandings. However I am experiencing pain from prolapsed external piles, but the doctor wanted to get rid of the internal ones first, then it will probably be surgery in the near future.

      Hi, Foxtrotte,

I had a full hemorrhoidectomy to remove the 3 external one's I had (they kept getting thrombosed) but he left the 2 internal hemmi's intact. I really wanted those removed as well, because Im afraid they will sooner or later become prolaped externals, and I cant go through that again. So my question to you is: Did your doctor tell you why he removed your INTERNAL hemmi's first and left the EXTERNAL one's for another surgery? My surgeon (just a General Surgeon) told me post surgery that he could only remove so many at a time, but has made no attempt to contact me to discuss what to do about the internal one's. I can feel something right at the opening of my butt but am unsure what Im feeling. It feels like a bump or lump or something IDK. This causes me severe pain after each bm (even the really easy one's) and sitting becomes unbearable. I have been dealing with this post surgery "recovery" going on EIGHT MONTHS!! And my life still revolves around my bowels, anal external swelling, internal hemmi's I guess is what I feel with my finger, and trying really hard to do good and not get constipated (it still happens occasionally, though, no matter what I do). So if you wouldnt mind telling me a little about your internal hemmi surgery Id appreciate it. My hubby wants me to go to a colorectal specialist and let him/her figure out what to do about my remaining problems and those internals. I wont lie...Im afraid. I cant imagine the rest of my life like this (Im miserable & desperate) but the thought of another anal surgery stops my blood cold. This recovery is killing me slowly a day at a time. Im really upset that he didnt remove at least ONE of the two internals. Maybe if he had, I wouldnt still be suffering. Im not interested in banding or anything like that. If I end up having to do anything else, it will be the complete removal of the internals. I just want my life back...one that includes sitting without pain, bm's without pain (mostly after bm) and walking (friction) pain. Help!! Who should I see (what kind of specialist) and what should I let them do me? I just want them gone completely. I can hardly even insert a suppository with ease and without pain because I can feel something inside making insertion difficult. Sorry this is so long. I just need answers or advice or something.

      Hey Janet,

sorry to hear you are suffering so badly. I think that if you are in such a desperate state now then you should at least book an appointment with a colorectal specialist, there is no harm in seeing what they have to say and a consultation doesn't mean you have to go through with anything-you have nothing to lose! It will give you some peace of mind and also some professional feedback to take the next step with 😃

I'm lucky that where I live even our public system will refer us to specialists for this type of stuff, general GP surgeons usually aren't as experienced as the specialists so I think that talking to a specialist about your problem will help you, and like I said it doesn't mean you have to go through with anything! 😃 good luck if you do though!

Hope you get relief soon. I actually had banding done on 1 internal hemorrhoid two days ago. I did drive myself home, it was definitely uncomfortable but doable. Having another one banded in 2 weeks.

Have your bandings been successful ? I read so many posts on here saying their Banding didn't work. Need some success stories!
