Running after Big toe fusion

Posted , 3 users are following.

Hi had fusion op on left big toe sep 2014. Recovery is going to plan, however I am wondering when or if I can start jogging/running on a treadmill. Any advice would be great.

Thanks

Gordon, I had both big toes and three toes fused.  My surgeon said I could start playing golf and jogging again in three months.  I did start golfing in three months but waited until the fourth month to start jogging again.  I just didn't feel ready.

Lynn7777 thats great news, I have googled the question and found very little on running/jogging. My fear was it could do damage to the fused toe. Its coming up 5 months now and walking is no problem but would love to start going back to the gym.

Just a update to say I have been running over 4 mile  3 times a week with no problems. Hit 6 months since op tomorrow and it feels better than the pain I used to have before op. Anyone worrying about getting it i would say the worse part is the recovery. I was back to work in 3 months working 10 hour shifts with steel cap boots on. I feel more ache for a 10 hour shift than a 4 mile run.

Glad to hear your back at work and in boots. This is a procedure that I may have to consider for both feet any advice or reassurance would be appreciated.

Steve going back to work and in steel cap boots will be difficult at first. I was on light duties for a couple of weeks, but in time your toe gets better and things start to get back to normal. My doctor says it looks like arthritis in my knee but still not got the results for x-ray yet. I found leg stretches work good in helping with work and now my knee, advice to you Steve is take it easy at work.

Gordon How is your mobility with both big toes fused is walking difficult.

If you don't mind me asking how old are you? I'm 43 and worried about the long term effects of Fusion of both feet.

Hi Steve I have had just 1 big toe fused and its nearly 7 months since op, and walking is not a problem. I am 38 years old and was worried about the future but I have found it gets better week by week.
