Running again after stable ankle fracture?

Posted , 6 users are following.

I broke my fibula (weber A fracture) in June and had the aircast and boot for 7 weeks or so. Im walking fine now, a bit slow and stiff, sometimes still a bit sore but I am just wondering if anyone was in a similar situation and when they were able to run again?

im guessing running you should be able to run again

If you look at athletes that come back from all sorts of knee, ankle, leg surgery

    Id discuss with your ortho

am sure I will be able to run normally again soon! I don't really have contact with an orthopaedic dr anymore. Last I heard from him was because my ankle was taking longer to heal than expected. But he told me he wasn't concerned and that I should just rehabilitate slowly. Since then it has gotten way better so hoping it has united fully. I haven't had it x-rayed since 8 weeks into the fracture. I tried to run on it last night and it was only a little bit sore so think I just need to build it up slowly

Hey, thats good that youre on the mend now. Its such a long dragged out process isnt it.

I would be quite interested in finding this out too, i used to go to the gym regular before my accident and really want to get back into doing some good cardio and burn some of these extra calories iv put on by being sat around for so long. Have you managed to get to a gym? I find walking on the treadmill really helped me

Hey, Yeah it was so long and dragged out. I was lucky I didn't need surgery but I was still so fed up!! Was yours a stable fracture/what happened? I used to regularly go to the gym and play friendly hockey but feeling so anxious about it now incase the ball hits my ankle or anything. I've not went back to the gym since it happened but I am debating trying yoga or maybe gyming and walking on the treadmill.

where you under the care of an orthopedic specialist? maybe check in with them. If not, see a physio and get a check done before you commence impact work.

I had a weber B fracture and had ORIF in April, and am still not cleared for running as I had a few complications with ligament healing but hopefully starting this week! The original timeframe was at the 4month mark to start impact work. My ortho told me to start by running on grass (soft impact) before moving to harder surfaces.

Ive been working with a physio/EP team pretty closely because I play ice hockey and dont want to get back on the ice before my leg is ready (i didnt break it on the ice though, just falling down the stairs at the rink instead!)

Last I heard from the orthopaedic Dr was that I should just rehabilitate slowly. This was around 4 weeks or so ago. I had a physio but not anymore because I moved back to uni. He sort of just told me to not overdo it, and be guided by pain. That was a while ago though. I feel that I am at the stage where I want to try and push it a bit. Aw I'm sorry to hear about your foot! It mustve been so hard with a longer recovery with ORIF.

Aaah I'm sorry to hear it still swells up. Mine doesn't swell too much now but I haven't needed surgery or anything as of yet. I am thinking I will just try and build up running slowly but I'm so impatient

    Hi

i had a dislocated & trimalleolar fracture dislocation of my ankle in march 2019 and had ORIF done. I had pain and limping for 8 months and my ortho dr recommended removal of all the hardware in my ankle ( plate & 12 screws) which was done under GA end of Oct last year. Following rehab i was reviewed in January this year by the ortho Dr who advised i would have to avoid any high impact activities like running to protect my ankle from further degeneration as i now had stage 3 arthritis in the injured ankle and may need ankle fusion later on.

I suppose it all depends how much damage remains in the ankle post surgeries as to how much activities are advised by the ortho Dr.

    Good luck !
