Ruptured achilles tendon

So I ruptured my achilles tendon four weeks ago today, had surgery and was in a hard cast for two weeks and then put into a boot with crutches which I am in now, however since been put in the boot  the only excercises I was given by the doctor at the beginning was elavating my foot towards me and then pointing downwards as I was given a protocol to stick with it, I had been doing this for the two weeks and I then went to see the physio again today (where I hoped Id get more excercises) and she saw that I was doing this excercise well, but she never gave me anything extra to do as she said she has to wait and stick with the schedule the doctor gave, but my next appointment isnt for another 2 and half weeks and I am going out of my mind with boredum and just want to get out of this boot, I have also been walking around without my crutches putting full weight on my foot as I have no pain in it, even though Im only meant to put25% weight on it, Is it bad that im leaning on it could I be doing more damage to the healing tendon? Also has anyone any advice on whether I should start doing heal raises or something on my own without a physio? Or should I go pay for a private physio to get a second opionion and hopefully they will speed up the process? Thanks for reading I know this was really long lol! All feedback appreciated.

Hi , I had surgery nearly 3 weeks ago ,and I'm still only in my first temperary cast ,I haven't even had my staples removed yet I'm having them out on Monday ,then a hard cast for 8 weeks then a moon boot for for how ever long it takes was told I would be up and about within 9 months ,so what I'm saying is things seem to be racing along for you after only 4weeks ,I would seriously say slow right down because Achilles recovery is a long and slow process ,I'm amazed you have gone through this process in four weeks ,I wish you luck and hope all goes well

Hi there.  Can sympathise with your predicament.  Just into day 11 of my experience.  Have been wearing the boot from day 2 and have not had surgery.  Was not given any advice regarding exercises other than do not put any weight on it and remove the wedges every couple of weeks.  Certainly judging from all the posts I have seen on this forum so far I think you will be very lucky to be back to full working within 6 months.  I am struggling mentally with the idea of being out of action for such a long time but at the end of the day the medical people have the training and experience and we just have to accept that they know what they are doing.  Good luck my friend and take it easy

I ruptured my achilles on Nov 1 and didn't have a choice but the non surgical route. I was in a cast for 4 weeks and given the boot to wear for 4 weeks. Ditched the boot after just over a week.

Long story short, everyone heals at a diffferent rate but the physio/consultant would (to me) seem to go at same rate for everyone regardless.

Saw the phyio when i got the boot and never saw her again after that. Saw the consultant 4x (after injury, when cast was removed, when boot was removed and 6wks after this)

Only exercise i was given were, flexing n rotating the foot to strecth the tendon and pushing against an exercise band/towel. Did those but got bored and did everything else i was told not to do such as stationery cycling, xtrainer etc. I basically tried and exercise and if it didn't cause any discomfort, continued with it within reason (not doing it for too long, not using too big a weight/resistanance).

Did a fair amount of walking in the boot within the first week and took the a wedge out of the boot after two days and the other wedge by end of the week.

Was back dancing by end of december (all be it not very well) and started jogging mid february.

    Good luck to everyone

I think if you have surgery the main worry is you tear the stitches to hold it together ,that's why its a slower process, I tried the non surgical route was in a boot for 6months and was mobile the whole time,my injury is now 17 months old after being miss diagnosed so surgery and taking it slow was my last option
