Full rupture of right achillies 9 weeks ago playing netball, had 3 different cast, took off cast yersterday and have walking boot. Been told that I need to be walking without crutches but am finding this very hard, foot still tender, bruised and swollen, how long does it take to walk again?doctor said i had good chance of rerupture, suffer with poor circualtion so that does not help healing. Any one had similar experience?

How long can you stand for?

grateful for any advice.

I was walking (full weight bearing) in 6th week of boot without crutches. I did have op tho so don't know if that makes a diff. Limped for a few months-esp first thing in the morning till I got going. Always did the exercises the physio gave me 3 or 4 times a day. Its been 11 months now and no limp at all- doubt anyone would notice slight diff in ankle unlesss they knew.

I ruptured my left Achilles on Nov 5th 2007 playing squash - heard crack like rifle shot! straight to casualty and into 1st plaster (white) – appointment with specialist on the 7th operation on the 8th - back in plaster (2nd & 3rd plasters blue) without moving 6 weeks, then moved foot - ouch - re set for 2 weeks (4th cast black) - moved again (no. 5 pink - don’t ask - the guys in plaster room hold all the cards), then in every week (number 6 green, 7 red and 8 orange!) to try and get foot to right angles - no chance! able to put weight on foot after 10 weeks, able to hobble without crutches 11 weeks (relief), see specialist tomorrow (6th Feb) and hope to have my leg back!

My specialist strongly advised having the operation as I am young, fit and active (was) and clearly explained the pros and cons of both treatments available. Thank you to all the staff at the N&N Uni. Hospital

P.S. Has anyone had more than 8 casts?
