****Hello everyone.

I am 26 and female. about 1.67cm tall and 51kgs.

I was wondering if anyone knows whether food coloring can cause your stool yo be lighter? Mine has been clay colored since this morning (I've passed stool twice since just because I'm very regular and have been eating a lot of fibrous fruit and have removed meat from my diet). Anyway, yesterday I snacked on these pastel colored candies. Bright green, pink, yellow, purple and blue. Since i do not have any other symptoms, no foul smell, dark urine, pain, diarrhea, fatigue, could that be the culprit? i don't want to stress myself out or go the doctors unnecessarily so here I am.

i would give it a couple of times passing stool and dont eat those candies if it returns to normal color then that very most likely is the culprit

I agree with Heather. Stay off the candies for a few days and see how it goes. Clay-coloured stools are certainly a sign of potential liver or gall-bladder disease, so shouldn't be ignored if they persist. However, we all produce odd coloured stools once in a while, so I don't think you need to worry if it clears up in the next week.

Change of diet can change stool consistency and colour. My dad got a dark purplish coloured stool after eating beetroot. You can also get dark stools after eating iron rich vegetables such as lettuce. Maybe you didn't absorb these candies well and that's why they the remnants of them showed up in your stools. Try putting meat back in your diet and avoid the sweets you were eating to see if your stools go back to brown again. Perhaps reduce the fibrous fruit a bit too. Maybe you are eating too much of it, You do say you are eating lots of fibrous fruit.

Amen to food etc. changing your stool colour. When I ate a lot of beetroot even my urine came out dark red. But if you want a real shock, try chewing activated wood charcoal tablets. My doctor currently has me on a trial of these to help control my excessive gas problem. A few days down the line, I started producing jet-black stools. It gave me a bit of a turn till I realised what was causing it!

Tea is another culprit for turning urine brown. Diet can do strange things to our digestive system.

I put my money on Sweeteners being the culprit inside the candies. Sweeteners in large quantities are known to cause stomach upset, if the contents of your gut it moved through the system faster it can come out more loose and mustard looking.

Totally agree about sweeteners seriously upsetting your digestion. Most contain sorbitol. I can't even eat prunes (natural source of sorbitol) without producing enough gas to run a small power station!

I'd been eating a lot of blackberries and then a packet of those sweets, half in the afternoon and half after dinner. My stool wasn't loose or anything, no painful gas but i suppose i did pass slightly more than usual if i think about it. also it wasn't yellow. just quite light and clay colored. it happened again this morning, so I'll wait a few more days to see if anything changes once it's out my system.
