Scan

I went for an ultrasound scan this morning as my CA125 blood result came back at 27, it was awful , I had to have the probe inserted which I wasn't told about , she did the outside first and said she couldn't find what she was looking for , I asked if it was something bad and the nurse was extremely rude to me , I'm say at work now scared that I've got something really bad and I'm in tender hooks waiting to receive a GP phone call, is it normal for them to use the probe ? Does this mean something serious ?

They use the probe to get a better look at the ovaries.....do they suspect you may have a cyst?

    Hi Natalie

Internal Ultra sounds are really common - during preganancies and also if they suspect you have a cyst or Fibroids etc. Cysts (especially dermoid ones) are often missed during routine, external scans on your stomach as they look similar to bowel.Internal scans allow the Sonograpgher to see your Ovaries and Uterus much more clearly so that they can find anything that shouldn't be there.

Try not to worry - they are trying to help! Sonographers will not tell you anything - they are not supposed to, their job is to take pictures of the scan and pass them to the doctors for assessment. The doctor will you call you if there is anything serious, which is very unlikely.

Just call your surgery and ask when the results are likely to be in.

Hope everything goes well for you

Hi Angie what are dermoid cysts? I am certain the doctors at this hospital are not doing all they can to find out what my pain is and why i am bleeding! I have been in hospital 5 days now and really fed up and still in a lot ofpain. Just cos i am not making a fuss I think they think i have no pain, but I have RA and have lived with pain for 23 years

, so I dont jump about moaning and groaning like a lot of people! X

When I had an ultrasound they discussed and showed me what they could see...I guess it depends how qualified they are to read the scan....a raised CA125 blood test can mean other things and my GP said they normally only worry about levels over 30.

Hi natalie,i can only speak from my own experiences,i have large and small ovarian cyst in left ovary, ony tummy scan they can never see so always have the probe, gives a clearer view.

my ca125 last week was 25 ,my gp said our doctors only investigate when elevated to 35+, so i was told im within normal range.

try not to worry and keep us updated x

Yes sorry it was 37, not 27.

I just found the nurse very rude and it frightened me.

Thanks all for the comments, feeling a little happier now.

Hi natalie- my CA125 was 27 and the nurse said if it had been in the 100s or 1000s she would have been worried. Yours is fine. Both my cysts were removed and benign . x

    Hi Natalie,

Don't worry, the probe thing is a normal procedure. I went for a scan a few weeks ago expecting to just have an ultrasound but then I was told that I would also have the internal one too which allows them to see things a little clearer.

If your CA125 is 27 then that's normal (anything below 35 is fine) so I shouldnt worry about that either. wink x

I am in hospital at the moment, came in sat night with abdominal pains. They thought it was appendix first  but then after ct scan said it was cysts on my ovary. The pain is awful but they dont want to do anything about it! Also i started bleeding on tuesday, its not like a period as my pad is bone dry, its just when I go for a wee. They can give me no explanation for this, and seem to just want me to go home still in pain and bleeding! I havent even seen a gynae. One doctor told me one if the cysts is quite large then some young girl claiming to be a doctor said they are tiny and should be causing me no pain and insinuated its all in my mind! I am fuming and worrying cos the pain is still bad and  this bleeding is nothing like a period

Dear Natalie your ca level at 27 is fine, elevated normally means over 35 and even then they can be elevated one minute and down the next, plus if it was elevated there are a number of reasons for it, mine was over 35 one time, i think it was 42 but the next two tests were normal. I am peri pausal soi believe hormones swayed mine about!

Hi Natalie, try not to worry about the internal scan. It is a really common procedure for women especially if they want to get a better look at the ovaries. I have a large ovarian cyst and they used this as one of the first steps to diagnosing mine. You're in the best hands and they're just being thorough. Best of luck with it all pet xx
