Scar advice...

Hi folks :-) Looking for a little scar advice... took my dressing off yesterday evening (17 days, posterior approach, dissolvable stitches and glue). A bit shocked at how long the scar was! It's also very lumpy and dented in several places (not the nice clean, smooth specimen I was hoping for 😂) Just curious as to whether that's fairly typical? Also interested in whether people showered straight away without any worries, and whether you started massaging/rubbing bio oil or similar into it straight away? Thanks in advance for any advice this fabulous group of hippies can provide ☺️

Hi... I couldn't agree more that this forum for us hippies is so awesome. Without all of the wonderful people here I would have many questions and I would have had a lot more fear. I was allowed to shower 4 days after surgery. I had staples and was told just to let the water run over them in to put a bandage on after patting it dry. I had the staples out at 14 days and my scar does not appear to be lumpy. I hope that you continue on this forum as I will not only to get questions answered but we also now can answer others questions from our own experience. smile

I certainly plan to stay Cindy :-) Am already finding I can offer the odd bit of feedback to people as my own experience with THR builds - 3 weeks tomorrow!

Pleased too that your scar is nice and smooth - seems to me that staples produce a very good result...

    Hi Sports,

i saw my consultant yesterday for my 6 week check up. My scar is also quite lumpy and the physio also noticed that at one end it 'dipped' as though it was stuck. My consultant said that although it has healed at 6 weeks, it takes around 3 months for it to settle completely and that by then the lumpiness should have disappeared. I don't know if you had dissolvable stitches under the skin but they can also take more than 6 weeks to completely disappear and can make the scar feel bumpy. I know a lot of people use bio oil and e45 cream but my surgeon said it is best not to use creams and oils should until after 12 weeks so I'm following his advice. My physio suggested massaging gently across the scar to gently try to separate the underlying tissue from the skin but very carefully. 17 days is still early days and in a few more weeks I am sure our scars will seem more even and smooth! Hope this helps.

Thanks Basia - that helps a lot! I did indeed have dissolvable stitches under the skin, so was interested to hear how long they can take to disappear completely - would certainly explain lumpiness...

So, just like so many aspects of recovery from a THR, I just need to be more patient on the scar front :-) Will lok forward to hearing how yours settles...

    Hello

My scar (lateral with disolvable stiches) was really quite ugly and jaggered in the first days and remained so even after it was sealed tight.

BUT, after several more weeks, it is now a very smooth, clean line. I am delighted with it.

    (photos are available lol )

    Keep the faith :-)

I can't take any credit, I am afraid. I just used Bio Oil from about 5 weeks on. I still use it but am quite lax about the frequency.

I used it on my stomach when I was pregnant along with pure Shea butter and I didn't get stretchmarks so I'm a fan! 🙂

I've never heard of using almond oil or bio oil...I did read up on frankincense oil...and it has many great uses...I don't know how to post a pic...but it's great for stretchmarks and scars , for wrinkle repair...Also for artists pain ...and many more...even helps lower blood pressure...and even helps with preventing hair and teeth loss...I have some of it on hand and am going to try that...
