Hi all

I had my left thr on 10th August and things have been going really well - absolutely delighted except for 1 thing - scar pain.  Over the last two days I have had really sharp scar pain when moving - probably scar tissue formation as I have some "lumps and bumps" am trying to massage them out with bio-oil but it doesn't seem to be working - any advice from any one here??

    Hi Liz

Snap! I had mine done on 10th August too, I've not noticed much scar pain, It whines a bit if I've overdone it, and I get the odd twinge, how've you been apart from that?

I have had the same with my scars.... rubbing cream and oil in but think it is just the nerve endings knitting back to gether.

Hi liz, after having 2 hip replacements and 1 surgery on my hip, i have always had alot of scar tissue with lumps and bumps. It also is super sensitive if my kids accidently knock into me.I do recommend epson salts baths regularly as this breaks down the inflammation in it, and lots of massage. coconut oil is another great one or vitamin e oil ( comes in capsules, you pin prick the capsules and use the oil on the scar) excellent aid to fade scarring👍.Mild stretching also helps break the scar tissue up. Hope it passes

I can sympathise with kids knocking the scar.  My two year old son likes to climb over me and his elbows are the worst.

Hi liz, I have got the same problem and also found bio oil not good actually it makes my scar on hip itchy, now massaging Nivea body lotion which seems ok. I had my hip done four weeks ago.

I had my left thr done on the 13th.  For the first couple of weeks it was sore and not really possible to lay on.

It is now for the most part comfortable.  There are a couple of places along the scar that are more sensitive than the rest, with the bottom end of the scar being worst.  I think that is due to it being at the same point where I had a previous operation in April.

I use E45 cream at night and after washing, which seems to stop the itching.

My scar isn't very smooth and the top inch or so of the scar is higher on one side of the cut than the other.  It has gone down a bit over the last week, but I don't think it will ever be smooth again.

Hi Liz Having physio for other problems to do with my THR and she was working on my scar for awhile  because she said the fibres  had grown into parts of it. She is Spanish and I think she means muscles but She massaged away what she called knots and bubbles.   I found it a little painful but she said it was necessary to get rid of them. Regards  DOT

I have some Jasons Vitamin E cream left over from my carpal tunnel surgery. I'm trying that. No problems so far. I'm 3 1/2 weeks po.

Hey Mollyjr, How was carpal tunnel surgery. Did it work. I have numbness in first two fingers. I've been told it's easy, any truth to that?

It was awesome. I felt I didn't have use of my hand before. Now I'm great. Wouldn't hesitate to do it again. Get a good surgeon.

    Hi Liz

    i feel your pain!

I suggest elevate your legs and have a cold compress on the scar area. It is as many have intimated, the good old nerves fighting to re establish themselves. Rest, rest, walk , do the exercises and - you guessed it.....

    Rest!!

Hi Liz I'm 9 weeks post op and went to physio

yesterday and spoke to her about scar area and

the tenderness ,soreness tightness I've been using bio oil,she said it's due to all the nerves knitting back together and to be quit firm when you massage oil in .hugs xxx

      Hi Anna

I was given pretty much the same guidance from my physio this morning. He also suggested massaging with my fingertips on any lumps and bumps, to try and smooth them out the same as the rest of the skin.

I have been massaging in E45 cream twice a day, but so far I had just been using my whole hand.

If it was sudden pain, I had no better explanation to myself other than a nerve finding the other end and firing off a hello there to the other side of the muscle or nerve, you do get some very strange cramps, when you least expect it, all just part of the experinece I think.

Lyn I laughed at the thought of my nerves firing hello to each other and imagined them hunkering down behind muscles wearing little tin helmets 😊
