Scar tissue and cold weather

Hello to all!!

Have any of you done anything about your scar tissue? I did in the beginning while doing PT. I had the anterior hip relpacement 1 yr ago and I can’t raise my leg very far because of scar tissue.  I’m doing the other side in 2 weeks.

How about cold weather? Does anyone have pain or discomfort during this time with their new hip?

Hey hey hope your doing ok

My scar tissue appears to be irritating(squeezing) nerves so I have extremely bad pain in butt, down leg & at times it burns like fire. I can bend anyway I want but I pay for it later !!! On strong opiates to sort of help pain sad

Does pain keep  you from bending

Hi David. If I’m standing I can only bring knee up about a foot. My thigh feels very tight at the top where my scar is. Sometimes I do feel some pain closer to the groin. I just figured it was muscles. As they do move them out of the way for surgery.

I’m so sorry that you are in so much pain? All from scar tissue or from the cold?

I have what I call, cold steel pain, or discomfort.

After I got particularly cold one day, I noticed I had this deep seated ache inside my thigh, it went away rather slowly over the next couple of days.

Spoke to fellow hippie, a friend, and he said, oh thats the steel getting cold, did a bit of a double take, is it possible, but have decided he is right, cold steel, I now stay away from situations where I can can really chilled, and have had very few following episodes.

You know I had some sort of discomfort the other morning in my thigh. I did wonder if it was the cold or because I was on the treadmill the nite before. I’m very sedentary esp at work. It hasn’t gotten very cold here ...about high 50s to mid 60s and still have warm days.

I think we covered this topic a long time ago, and decided that it was not actually possible for the new hip components to cool down in winter or heat up when sunbathing due to the amount of contact they have with body tissue, otherwise the bones would also suffer from this.  As I remember, we concluded it must be deep scar tissue causing the feelings we get.

I was told to massage the scar quite firmly using Bio Oil and not to use E45 in that way as E45 was designed to be washed off afterwards.  E45 is a great product for washing, but we should not to leave it on the skin, I am sure this advice came from the NHS website, but have not been able to find it.

    Hi Dsilk,

I know what you mean ... I had (2) posterior THR surgeries and kind of zippers on each side of my hips - a lot of scar tissue formed, very uncomfortable and painful ---PT massaged the area and that helped - plus massaging it your self will too.

A great deal of the recovery takes place in the first two months, but complete return to normal takes longer. Bone around the metal parts keeps changing and remodeling for 1 to 2 years after surgery, which is why you might feel some aches and can tell when the weather changes.

When it gets colder I do feel the hardware in my thighs ... not painful though, just uncomfortable but bearable -

How are you doing otherwise? please let us know, okay

    big warm hug

Thank you for your replies and comments. I had my scar tissue massaged yesterday and that area isn’t as hard. Other than that I am fine but still getting used to my new hip as I need the other done and it’s harder when the bad hip isn’t doing what you want it to.

And scar tissue can become painful. I had breast surgery 3 yrs ago and I still feel discomfort there off and on.

Wishing you all the best “moving” forward. ☺️
