Hi

I know I'm probably being silly but after a THR I fractered my greater trochanter bone {top of hip} and 7 months later am still on crutches.

I was dfdiagnosed after that with osteoporosis.....thats apparently why it fractured so easily

Now beig on crutches and having got this recent diagnosis I'm not very confident. I keep thibnking if I trip/fall or whatever......another fracture?

I'm on calcium and vit d......was on Alendronic Acid but another doctor in the practice took me off it because it wasnt agreeing with me

I have an appointment to see my own doctor to check on that. As for the confidence bit.......How on earth do you stop thinking about falling or another fracture etc?

I know it sounds pathetic!!!

If you are pathetic, so am I. Falling is a major fear.   I fell and broke my pelvis on July 11th.  They gave me crutches which were an accident waiting to happen.  I got a walker/walking frame.  It is very UNCOOL but it took away my fear of falling, is very stable and you can walk more naturally than with crutches.  Would that work for you?  Mine has wheels and brakes.  When you are feeling better consider some balance exercise classes.

      Hi Susan

      Thanks for the reply.

I'm managing on crutches fine.....I use them in a walking movement...not both together....just one at a time...the way you would walk....does that make sense?

      I was using crutches before this but only for very long distances and that was because of my Kyphoscoliosis.....I could spend 3 to 4 hours  going round our shopping centre and for that I needed crutches. {Thats with a few stops at Starbucks or Costa for coffeecheesygrin}

I've got a rollator......walker with a seat which lifts and you can pop things in it. Wheels and brakes. Sounds similar to yours. I cant use it at the moment because I need to support one side {fractured side} and it hurts so much on my arm. Before the occasional time I used it was to support my back a little bit,

I suppose i should google balance classes.....where are you? I'm in the North East of England.

      That is a good idea

      Eileen,

I'm in New England (Maine, USA).  I wish we had the National Health Service!  It is where I go for much of my health information.  The NHS isn't trying to sell you anything. It just wants you to be well.  I can't get in to see my specialist until April.  Talk about lines to get healthcare!

      Hi Susan

On the whole the NHS is good....I've certainly got my moneys worth from them with all the attention etc. I bought my own rollator. They provided crutches but when I realised i wasnt going to rid of them any time soon I bought some for myself.....instead of NHS dull grey ones that make an awful noise I got a nice pair of pink and black ones.....if i have to use them I might as well have a nice pairwink

It was when you mentioned balance classes I wondered where you were from.....its not the most normal thing around these parts. I'm sure there must be some but I dont know where

I think doing balance exercises is a great way of banishing fear of falling. THere's the one where you stand on one foot while brushing your teeth, 30 seconds for each quarter of your mouth, eventually working up to doing this with your eyes closed (haven't got that far yet!) Classes are even better though, force you to actually do them!

      Hi Diana

I havent managed to find any balance classes in the North East of England but thats for the tip about standing on one leg/

Only one thing....I'll have to get ridof this hip fracture first and these blinkin' crutchescheesygrin but I will remember that one.....any others just send them this directionbiggrin But as you say a class would be better....I wouyld be more motivated if I thought I HAD to do it  LOL

Absolutely! Once you're up and running again - which I hope will be ASAP! I have balance problems after spraining the same ankle six times, I read up about it and there are things called proprioreceptors in the sole of our feet that tell the brain where we are - and every time you get a sprain or a break (aargh!) they get damaged. Turns out doing balance exercises is v. helpful. Who knew?! Wishing you a quick return to full health!
