scared and unwell - can anyone help?

Hi, I was looking for some advice. I have been suffering from bleeding/mucas in very loose stools (I'm going to the loo about 6-10 a day - very urgently sometimes within a few hours of eating), gas/bloating/lack of appetite/cramps/low energy every day for about 5 weeks now. The only way I am finding I get any relief from these symptoms is to not eat - adding to the tiredness. I have been examined by a GP who could not find any hemmoroids/tears to explain the bleeding/clots (there is quite a lot/mid red colour) so referred me for blood tests (full blood count/kidney/liver function/imflammation). These came back last week as 'satisfsctory'. I am now waiting for a colonoscopy appointment. I'm scared as I've never had one before. I suppose I am asking 1. What should I expect at the colonoscopy and 2. In your experience are my symptoms anything like chrons/colitis or am I totally barking upthe wrong tree? All I know is that something is wrong and I'm not sure how best to help myself - other than not go too far from a toilet!! Plus im wprried as my blood tests have come back ok that the colonoscopy wont find anything either. Any advice gratefully received. I'm a woman aged 33. Thanks.

Hi Melanie, it does sound like uc. Do ask to be sedated for colonoscopy. I was awake for both of mine under sedation, but the sedation makes it tolerable especially if biopsies being taken. I also had a couple of sigmoidoscopies where they only look at first part of colon & the only one I had without sedation was excrutiating, so do take the offer of sedation. You will likely have awful cramp in tum after due to trapped air, just go to the ward toilet & let it escape - you will much better quite quickly!!(the nurses will be used to this). If you are diagnosed with uc, avoid stress, & concentrate on getting yourself better by taking your meds regularly & as prescribed. They don't work overnight ,so patience & perspective will be needed. diet wise, best not to eat any fruit or veg with skins, rich foods & smaller regular meals or snacks when your appetite is low. probiotic yoghurts sooth me when appetite wains with some oat granola on top. good luck melanie & try to stay positive & try looking at the crohns & colitis uk website (google crohns & colitis uk) xx

Many thanks for the advice looloo! I'm still pretty apprehensive about the procedure but feel much better able to prepare after everyone's advice. I guess I just have to look at it as the only way for sure I'll know what's going on with me - and can then work on getting better! Thanks again. 😁
