Scared stiff

Having right THR this Thursday with spinal anaesthetic and I'm scared stiff. I think I've got everything ready but really worried how much pain I'll be in after. Any positive comments would be greatly appreciated.

    Hello,

I am so happy I did the surgery, what I posted about dime pain when I sleep is just me being picky, it's not that bad, I had worse pain before the surgery. Honestly the only time it hurts is when I do lay on it and that pain is very much tolerable compared to the pain I had before, and the pain is decreasing gradually was just seeking other people's thoughts on when it fully hoes away, my surgery went great, i could tell my joint pain was gone immediately as soon the spinal wore off, I would do it all over again right now, I have to get my right one done next year, and will have no hesitations with it. The only pain I had was some muscle pain, and my pain wasn't bad at all. Still have some muscle psin...only when I sleep, but other than that I feel great good luck hope all goes great

Try not to worry...the post op discomfort is nothing compared to the constant pain you probably have had for ages!! i'm now nearly 12 months on and forget i even have a new hip!! I was really well afterwards...worst thing as you'll read from others is sleeping on your back...but you'll cope..after all you know it will get better....no regrets!!!

    Hi

I had spinal anaesthetic and also general so I was asleep throughout?

in my case I can honestly say there was no pain at all!!!

i woke up the next morning expecting pain....nothing.  It takes a while for the spial numbness to wear off staff give you pain killer tablets while you are in hospital but i took them 2 days only because they advised but in fact felt I didn't need them.

we are all different but pain can be managed if you need it ask for something.

worst for me was having to lie on my back as I rarely do but after 10 days was lying on my side gingerly rolling onto side.  Didn't get much sleep for a while but not because of pain just restless.

    good luck keep the faith

Hi Sue..You wouldn't be human if you weren't scared..

I know I was back in Feb

You have to somehow try to have a positive mind set,if you have epidural combined with sedatives youll know nothing about it til you return to the ward, don't worry.

Just try keep telling yourself it's only short term,a few months of post op discomfort for a new lease of life.

Nearly 12months post op and my new hip is great, and glad I had it done.

After saying that I'm due a 2nd THR soon and must admit I'm still scared,,but will hopefully be better prepared this time.

Wouldnt it be great if you could have only 2days notice for surgery

    Hi Susan,

I had my left hip replaced with spinal (due to breathing issues) last August. Can't tell you how much better it felt pretty much immediately.  I had no after effects to speak of and was soon able to reduce pain killers to the minimum. Yes I was able to hear some noise in theatre but you can't see or feel anything so concentrate on your music player and you'll be fine. I'm having my right hip done any time now, also with spinal so I can only hope that it goes just as well next time. All being well I will soon be walking without the aid of a stick and I can finally get my life back!

Good luck for Thursday and don't worry I'm sure you'll be fine.

Hi Susan  I am 8 weeks post op and like you was scared stiff, mostly about the spinal block but taking all the advice they gave this was the best option for recovery. It was nowhere near as bad as i expected and they gave me a drug which made me sleep throughout so no recall of anything, happy days! I was also scared about getting out of bed after but again i was quite surprised because although there was discomfort from the wound there was no pain standing happy days again. The worse part of it all for me is being impatient to fully recover, but you can't rush it all and have to accept that it takes time. I still get surprised that there is no pain in my hip when i stand after having pain for two years. Good luck!

Hi Debbie i am getting mine done in 2 weeks just worried if i will need the other hip done too because most people say if one hip is replaced we will need the other one replaced too.Is that the case? Thanks for your reply

I hope not. Mine seems fine at the moment, it has worked very hard for a few years. Once i am back to normal my aim is to lose weight and ensure i get plenty of exercise. This has taught me that you need to look after yourself.

Try not to worry thats what i was worried about but i had spinal block and sedative and its eas great they wake you in recovery u go back to room. They then brought my dinner in which i bolted down cos u dont get the bad after effects like with a general. They bring u pain killers but i cant say i was in much pain more like a bit uncomfortable and not very comfy having to sleep on your back. Good luck and best wishes.
