Scared! The Psychological Peri Symptoms

Hello Beautiful Strong Peri Sisters,

I want to start off by saying how helpful this site/your questions ans response has been to me during this very, very difficult time.

I am 43 y/o and have been perimenopausal a little over 2 yrs. All of my sx's (short for symptoms) started shortly after attempting to titrate myself off of an antidepressant. Every since then, I feel my mind nor my body has been able to stabilize. The sx's are cyclical-worse before, during, and after my period. I can almost feel the hormonal shifts. Leaves me with a week or 4-5 days of feeling normal.

The physiological sx's are bothersome but the mental sx's are the worse. I am worried any would love to hear how you all deal/cope with the mental aspect of peri, ie heightened anxiety, intruisve scary thoughts, feeling out of sorts etc. I am really struggling and any feed back would be super helpful.

Thank all of you for sharing your stories and giving me the courage to share mine!

Hello Paulina. I struggled terribly with this years ago in the beginning. What i did was read the Bible, talked to God and asked for healing. Also i found that night was my worst. I even had bad dreams. I was completely riddled with this. I never condoned tv in the bedrooms but i went out and bought one and watched old movies, comedies when bad thoughts would creep in. Also i enjoy painting,.Do the things that bring you peace.., drink camomile tea, it calms the nerves also peppermint tea. Magnesium and omega 3 is a must vitamin also vitamin d. I am wishing you the best and Merry Christmas 🌲

      Hi Hopeforever,

I will definitely try the Chamomile tea at night-I'm sure it can help with soothing the nerves. I recently started taking Magnesium and L-theanine before

      bed and it does help.

This by far has been the most unpredictable experience of my life. Some days I feel totally normal and other days I feel as if my mind/thoughts are hard to deal with.

I cant thank you enough for replaying, it really does help to know what other's have experienced and how they've gotten through this time.

Merry Xmas to you as well 🎄

I agree about the chamomile too. I am a trauma survivor. Before peri I had PTSD/GAD. My doctor tells his patients with GAD to drink chamomile tea because it helps calm GAD. It really does help. If you have a ragweed allergy check with your doctor if you can drink chamomile.

Things I can count really help my anxiety. I am concentrating on the counting and not the nerves. I do a lot of diamond painting, color by numbers, PicCross type video games. I love to play card games.

The most horrible thing of Peri is the anxiety. I worked so hard as a trauma survivor to be able to heal. My anxiety & PTSD I could count on one hand per year when I would have attacks. I was so proud. Peri that went out the window.

Counting hobbies like cross-stitch, diamond painting. Chamomile tea. LED candles, cold washcloths on my neck. These things have been lifesavers.

      Hi Aliseanya,

Thank you for replaying-I really appreciate your insight and suggestions.

I agree with you, distraction helps with the anxiety symptoms. I've been thinking about taking up the violin again, maybe this is a good time to

      do it.

The LED light and cold wash cloths sounds great! I'll have to give it a try.

      Stay Strong and thank you!

can i ask what antidepressant you were on? and do you get other peri symptoms? as withdrawal symptoms can be similar, im a bit of an expert (dont want to be) i cant drink camomile as i have an allergy and peppermint makes reflux worse, before all this started i got off mirtazapine and started a help group, it was horrendous but i healed, im tapering off citalopram (brutal) and ive got off codeine xx

      Hi Toria,

I actually remember your posts when I began to have terrible SSRI withdrawl sx's. The withdrawl sx's from Escitalopram were so horrendous, I ended up going up on the dose (gradually) to ease some the sx's only to feel just as bad or worse. Feel like I am caught between a rock and a hard place-still on escit 5mg. My peri sx's started, I believe shortly after tapering down on Escit. I have been trying to figure out if its protracted withdrawl or peri for the last two years.
