Scared to take Fluoxetine but desperately need to feel better!

Any advice would be much appreciated! I have suffered with anxiety and depression for a long time but this has gradually got worse since having my 2 year old. I have been prescribed 20mgs Fluoxetine but am so scared to take them. I have 3 children (one is a toddler) and work full time. I have to go to work and have a very stressful job. I am worried about how the side effects will take hold as I have to function at such a high level.

But I am just as anxious at staying as I am, I feel like I'm losing my mind. I had bad anxiety before and was prescribed Mirtazapine which really helped but gained a lot of weight and really don't want to go down that route again. I guess what I'm asking is will I still be able to work if I start the Fluoxetine, and will I be able to sleep?

Everyone reacts to the meds differently - some people react badly and others don't. You won't know until you take them. You probably will however find your anxiety getting worse before it gets better, but that's how the meds work. This will wear off over time. The meds do affect sleep and lots of people find they get insomnia, but this is only temporary and should resolve itself over time. Also don't expect instant results because SSRI meds and recovery from anxiety take a long time. You just can't hurry it.

Anxiety is the result of stress - stress is your body's alarm system telling you to slow down, which most of don't listen to - and of course the end result is anxiety. Once we've crossed that line, we find it's a whole different ball game. Your body cannot cope with the high demand you put onto yourself - your body is like a car engine, run it continuously at top speed and you'll soon find it'll break down. 3 children, full time work, stressful job ......... I know lots of people have to work in this day and age, but you really should look at your lifestyle too, because anxiety needs a calm body so it can heal itself.

Anxiety and depression are on the increase and it's not surprising with our fast paced lifestyle.

Humans aren't built for this pressure ........

I know - it happens to us all. We can see it coming, but continue until we need to take action.

Hope the meds go ok - take things slow, don't rush up through the meds. You will begin to feel better in time.

Let us know how you get on.
