You need to speak to your GP about this. It could be nothing, it could be a panic attack, or it could be something more serious. Get it checked out, if only to reassure yourself. Don't ignore it.

It was a panic attack michelle

Whilst this does sound like classic symptoms of a panic attack, it does fit the symptoms of some other conditions. I would advise you to see your GP especially if you get these symptoms upon waking again.

    Hi Michelle,

If you actually woke directly into this state it was unlikely to have been a panic attack. The symptoms do fit somewhat, but panic attacks come on when we get over-anxious and hyperventilate for a while, and we don't do that in our sleep.

Glad to hear you're seeing your doctor soon. It's vital to describe your symptoms as accurately as you can.

For example, did you wake up to all these symptoms, or did some of them develop over the next few minutes? Did you perhaps wake up with tingling and numbness in your hands, and did the feeling of tightness in your chest develop over the next couple of minutes? Or the other way round? Or neither?

And were your hands really numb? Did you have any sensation in them at all or was it just subjective? And was the tingling just a slight sensation of prickling in your finger-tips or did it feel like electric shocks? In my own experience, the tingling feeling produced by hyperventilation is quite mild, and even though my fingers feel numb, they're not really. However, I also suffer bouts of peripheral neuropathy due to a diagnosed auto-immune condition. These often happen during the night and feel entirely different from the odd sensation produced by hyperventilation. My hands are quite literally numb during peripheral neuropathy attacks - no sensation at all from touching them etc., just the electric shock feeling.

The other possibility is that you woke in an attack of sleep paralysis. This is when the brain hormone that paralyses the body during dream sleep (to stop us jumping up and acting out our dreams) either kicks in before we're asleep or continues for a minute or two after we wake. This typically causes a feeling of pressure on the chest, total paralysis and often tingling or other odd sensations in the hands or elsewhere in the body. It's scary but completely harmless, and doesn't require treatment. Everyone gets it once or twice in their life.

Sorry if I sound pedantic, but I used to be a nurse, and I know so many people get wrongly diagnosed because they don't describe their symptoms accurately. I know it should be up to the doctor to ask the right questions, but I'm afraid they don't always - particularly in the UK, where they're so overloaded they don't have the time.

Hi lily thx for the reply I woke up with the tingling hands but they weren't totally numb it was kind of like when u ave been laid on ur hand and it goes numb and then tingles as the blood rushes back but I wasn't laid on them also I think the tightness in the chest may ave come on just after when I couldn't get back to sleep

I'm guessing the chest sensation was probably caused by anxiety over not being able to get back to sleep, as you said in your opening post that you tend to wake up too early. I know about that one as I was the same when I was young and also used to get a bit panicky after these early awakenings. The good news is that it improves with age for many people. Now, at 72, I only rarely have problems!

The tingling in your hands might have been anything - an auto-immune condition, a minor problem in your neck, a drug reaction or just a one-off thing you happened to notice because you were awake. It's not likely to be down to anything sinister, but worth mentioning to your doctor.

Just one final thought on the drug question: you're not on amitriptyline are you? I don't think this is a reported side-effect but I recall getting a lot of altered sensation in my fingers and lips when I took it for a few months nearly 50 years ago.

OK, I used what I thought was a clever device that would get me past the automatic moderator in my reply just now... but not clever enough. Sigh...

I think zolpidem might be your problem. I'll send you a private message. This won't reveal the identity or email address of either party.

Insomnia has been a major symptom of my depressive illness. Over the years I've tried everything from rohypnol to trazadone. Two years ago my psychiatrist and I hit on a medication regime that works for me. I take 4mgs of clonazepam and 25mgs of quitiapine about 2 hours before I want to go to bed, then when I'm in bed I take 7.5mgs of zopiclone. Every 2 weeks my prescription for zopiclone is rotated for Ambien (zolpidem), I take zolpidem for two weeks and it is rotated back to zopiclone and so on. I do still very occasionally have a bad night, but my sleep has been pretty good for quite a while now.

Im not recommending this treatment pattern for you. Everybody is different. My point is that if you can build up a good relationship with your GP or a psychiatrist they will be able to work with you and discover a regime that works for you. I'm going to be removing the quitiapine from my meds soon, it is very effective and you don't really build a tolerance to it, but it can have some pretty harsh side effects

      Lily,

Please don't try to get around moderation. If you post a link that is acceptable it will get approved. If you don't want to wait for moderation then PM as you have stated. Links to drugs.com will get approved but if you want to mention it generally then just say drugs .com with a space.

      Regards,

Hi jack can I ask r u in the uk? I do c a psychiatrist and ave asked about quetapine b4 but they will not give it to me as for trazadone did this help u at all cos this was offered to me but I chose sertraline which I no longer take as I didn't feel I needed it anymore and ave to say I don't feel any worse for not taking it its just the insomnia that's crippling me ☹️

I'm in the UK at the moment. Trazadone did help me to sleep, but it also made me feel horrible. In the end I told my psychiatrist that I'd rather deal with insomnia than the way trazadone made me feel. But I know people that it works for and who don't report any negative side effects.

There are things you can buy online without prescription that some people find helpful. Melatonin and GABA seem to help some people. I've tried melatonin, it did help me recover from jet lag once but didn't help with insomnia.

i hope you get help. Insomnia is just horrible, it can really grind you down.
