what is the usual length of time that schizophrenic patients spend in hospitals if they are having a paranoiac episode? And how long does it usually take to recover from such a breakdown? Worried about my son and his mental health problem..

Hi, I have paranoid schizophrenia. There isnt an average inpatient time and there isnt an average recovery time unfortunately. Everyone is different and so is each episode. It will depend on how he responds to meds and talking therapies, and when he regains enough insight to be considered safe to discharge.

I've had several forced inpatient admission for psychotic episodes. Some were 28 days, one was 4 months, and one was 7 months. So it really does depend, unfortunately there is no clear answer. Its always been at least 3 months after discharge (sometime smuch longer) untill I've been well enough to go back to work and drive again. Hope this helps a little.
