Sciatica and foot numbness

Hi there

Ive had sciatica in the past after lifting a washing machine up some stairs with a delivery person, I was silly only 23 years old, and i ended up with 2 herniated discs. However after 6 months I recovered without having to have surgery. Then in 2008 I had the worse episode ever, a real raw nerve pain, I couldn't walk and could only crawl to the toilet if needed, it was awful, I ended up with permanent nerve damage to my right foot and upper leg, but again I managed to avoid surgery as it healed within 4 months, but the price was a numb right foot and thigh.

This time I have problems on the left side of my body but this time it is different. I feel it in my buttock and side of the hip but it rears up at night mostly. It just won't let me rest. Unlike before where I could find a comfortable position of some sort, this time no position is comfortable so I am on strong pain killers, but now my left foot has gone numb, and it is spreading up my leg. The problem is, that nerve damage is happening and yet no MRI has been offered. My next consultants appointment isn't for another 3 weeks and Im worried that it will end up much worse. I went to ER a week ago about the foot numbness but they didn't seem bothered, not unless i'd lost bowel control. I have had ordinary x rays which have only shown wear and tear. I am 53. Any ideas how I can get an MRI any sooner please?

1st off you need to get put on lyrica to help with the nerve pain it is a miracke worker (gabapentin sucks) I got my mri rushed by my pain mgt dr. If I were you I would concentrate on having the dr write a script for lyrica then you will be able to rest and waiting on a mri wont be so bad. Im 43 with permanent nerve damage. My pain is from L4 to my toes even after a spinal fusion . After the hell Ive gone through this is my best advice.

thank you Kim, that is some good advice, and yes it is hell. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

Take care, and I hope that you never experience sciatica again. Thanks again xxx
