Sciatica lumbar pain

Hi friends,

Now I am suffering from sciatica pain since 4 months. The doctor took x-ray and found that I have Spine Spondylitis. So he prescribed gabapentin sandoz 300 mg. I am scared to take as I have seen people who took this tablets have swollen face etc.

Have anyone tried this Gabapentine for Sciatica pain? The pain is severe and makes my knees and pain even more now. I can't sit or stand long. If I sit it's difficult to stand and walk. It takes awhile for me to walk . Please share your experiences/ opinions.

Thanks in advance

I have taken Gabapentin for many years at 300 mg per day. I have never had an issue with swelling, but I was told this drug is not addictive, but it definitely is. For a short period of time, I don't believe that is a issue, however, my doctor kept prescribing it telling me it wasn't addictive, and now I cannot get off this medication. I am taking for severe disc degeneration in my neck. It did work for the nerve pain, just use with caution.

Personally, I would never take Gabapentin (Neurontin). For many people, it's a nightmare. I put on 20 pounds in four weeks plus the other side effects. Then there's this warning...

    Gabapentin Warning

You can also take an ibuprofen-based OTC anti-inflammatory but only short-term. Long-term use can eat your stomach lining away and cause bleeding. On the good side, your sciatica may be easily curable by chiropractic...

    Sciatica

I got my case of it five weeks post-TKR. Once your hips are aligned and SI joints freed up, you may find total relief. Sometimes, however, it has a spinal cause...as in the last case I describe in the link. For something like that, I'd get a chiro to make sure that I was in alignment and then go to a great PT person who can usually find you some relief by decompressing the underlying vertebral problem. Surgery to correct a spinal nerve impingement is the LAST thing you want to do but may be necessary as in my case with the bone spur. You climb "the ladder of care" until you get permanent relief. Root cause analysis will point you to the appropriate treatment.

Meanwhile, some Voltaren Gel (RX in the US, generic diclofenac elsewhere, check for interactions), OTC AsperCream 4% Lidocaine or BioFreeze may help topically. Even a cheap $25 TENS machine can be helpful.

HI Chico, I too suffer from back ache since my R TKR (Jan.18 ) & now pain on the inside of my R thigh & hip. Surgeon said it could be my hip needs replacing too. Meanwhile i am due to have my other knee replaced in October. As I have one leg longer than the other now, due to the straightening of the leg from the KR & still walking with a limp, I'm assuming all this pain is due to a misalignment of my pelvis. I'm hoping that once ive had the other knee done i'll be balanced out again & hopefully the pain will go, but don't know if I'm being a bit optimistic ! Forgot to mention I've also acquired a slight stoop, a bit embarrassing for a 64 year old ! Any thoughts ? I Value your opinion, since you give so much good advise. Thanks. J.

Thank you Chico, yes I am taking diclofenac 50mg.l for the pain.

Have you heard of Yurashi Gentle Touch therapy?

One leg longer than another can simply be caused by a tilted pelvis because your hips are out of alignment. When I got sciatica 5 weeks post-TKR, my legs were 3/4 to 1" different. Totally fixed by my chiropractor in less than a month. The alignment problem is usually caused by a subconscious shifting of our weight to avoid the TKR pain. This is very common...reported on here all the time. Chiropractic is simple and effective, non-invasive and uses no RX drugs. Yes, a bit of ibuprofen for a week max for the inflammation.

Thank you all for your responses. I will try to go to a chiropractor and see if I feel better. Very frustrating.

Don't feel like living with so many aches and pains.

Surgeon said burning on my LTKR leg is a result of the sciatica. PT not so sure-thinks its nerve damage caused by surgery and cut nerves. JUST got off a traction table at PT and burning still there and sciatica pain in hip. I don't want to take pain meds! 5 weeks post TKR and my knee is awesome -just need this burning to stop!
