Sciatica now!

hello everyone : wondering how many of you have progressed on to sciatica through their spine trauma or disc degeneration? Just lately I have sciatic pain affecting my left hip and thigh and lifting that leg up is painful. At present my sciatic pain only comes on when lying down or sitting but not when walking.
?Also what type of exercise has helped you best?
?Thanks!

Hi,
That's interesting Diana, I think I may have this too. About 6 months ago, after cutting out Amitriptaline I woke one morning with agonising pain in my outer right hip. I couldn't walk more than 3 steps. On self checking there was nothing wrong with my hip bone, no grinding or clicking. I was lucky to get a cancelled appointment that morning. My gp agreed and put me back on Amitriptaline and also increased my garage tin, she thought it may be sciatica. Anyway, as long as I keep on with new pain management it's bearable.

Garage tin. This should be Gabapentin, where would we be without predictive text.

....yes wondered what Garage pin meant! Have you any idea what is causing you this sciatic pain, have you had an MRI that might show you disc degeneration, or perhaps even a prolapsed disc.
A prolapsed L4 disc is something I had in the mid-90's which needed surgery, a discectomy to remove the broken disc pieces which was a success, all sciatica removed. After that surgery a nurse later showed me a saline bottle containing my L4 broken disc pieces that reminded me of broken rice biscuits! A prolapsed lumbar disc caused me severe pain that before surgery I was unable to walk.
?Now 22 years later without pain I was involved in a RTA in January that caused a compression fracture to my L1 disc so hence the latest development of sciatica along with low back pain.
?I loathe to depend on pain killers although had to take morphine for two months this January but stopped after morphine caused my esophagus to spasm, a spasm that causes agonizing pain in the throat area, found out later morphine can at times affect some people that way.

Hi Diana, I had some bone spurs removed from my lower spine in 2010 and sine then I have had progressive pain in my lower back for which I have injections periodically. I say periodically as the NHS has knocked them down for everyone to 2 a year now which is of very little use. I now have sciatica in each buttock and down my leg on and off all the time. Some days it is bad and others I can cope. I know how you feel because it is painful. I take paracetamol and Pregabalin for the pain but unless I render myself totally dopey with Pregabalin then I can nearly always feel it. My Doctor said ther is very little they can do with sciatica, unfortunately. I suppose it has to do with disturbing things. I haven't had it so badly that I can't do things but it is in the way. I hope you manage to beat it.

I have cervical stenosis and spondylosis with myolepathy at levels c4, 5,6 and 7. Bone spurs at c5 6 and 7 are compressing spinal cord and giving problems.
All of the cervical spine has degenerated meaning complete fusion of neck.

When diagnosed in March 2013 I signed the consent forms immediately. However the operation was cancelled three times and by then I had bladder problems. The neurosurgeon would not operate until I had that investigated in case he was sued for causing it???That took over twelve months to sort out. By then the bone spurs had grown very close to a blood vessel near the spinal cord as well as pushing into the spinal cord. The neurosurgeon then stated that he would stop my left arm problems at the root exit from cervical spine. I asked him to put pen to paper regarding the spinal cord operation, but he would not commit to that, only the minor op. Anyway, he said, the bone spurs will be stuck to the cord and after disturbing them they will probably fall off over time and cause problems.
Pain pathway includes morphine patch, naproxen, gabapentin , amatriptaline.
