Sciatica or something worse

I am 21 years of age, and for this year I've had severe back and leg problems. The pain starts from the lower back all the way down to the back of the bottom of my leg. But it seems that nobody gives a crap and doesn't want to help me or wants to acknowledge my symptons. I've been to the doctors three times and they continuously state it's 'probably' muscle spasms, I've tried the exersize sheets they've gave me, the tablets they gave me and it just doesn't do anything. My family continuously tell me to get a job but they are too thick to understand that I can't do anything for more than an hour without feeling intense pain, the only relief I get is when I am in bed lying down. So if the doctors keep fobbing me off, giving me their advice which really isn't helpful and my family isn't helpful then what am I supposed to do? I am also incredibly weak in the arms and upper body I have gone from enjoying fighting as a profession to not even being able to push a lawn mower for more than ten minutes. I've had enough, I am only 21 and nobody cares or will help me.

Do an MRI it will let you know if there is an issue in the spine thats causing this.

The problem is that the NHs acting on instruction from the regulating body NICE no longer take back pain seriously or want to treat it. That may be why he has not referred you for a CT or MRI scan. It is mostly down to self-help unless you can get your GP to refer you for physio and that has a long waiting list. I have an appointment next week after having been referred in mid-February.

My wife and I have  both been to an osteopath and that has helped. My GP also suggests that acupuncture might help but of course that does not come on the NHS either.

Rossjames, if you are experiencing pain every day for more then 6months, even if it varies in intensity or you get relief from lying down, then you are suffering from chronic pain and you should be getting more help. Go back to your doctor and insist that he refers you to a specialist, a spine expert or neurologist. Ask for a copy of the letter they send and then you can chase this up with the hospital.

also, l don't know where you live but if possible ask to be referred to the Royal London orthopaedic hospital. Do not take no for an answer.
