Hi. It can last for as long as it isn't dealt with. Either exercises , Pilates, Yoga, RPG (Souchard) or specific treatments like traction. Eventually if caused by A Hernia , an operation, of which there are various versions and options. The pain can beome chronic. The body has mechanisms to remember the pain & you will have it forever if you aren't careful & just not act as soon as possible. Exams MRI Scan of the spine, go to a Specialist, Orthopdedist or Neurologist. Good luck, I know it's hell. I've done most of these things and have opted for the latest treament,t which is Ozone Gasi njections to fight inflamation   & reconstruct the discs.Very new but not alternative.Proven to work in most cases.

I've had lots of cases of sciatica especially during my hockey skating days.  If caused by spine or hip alignment, locked SI joints and more, a chiropractor can fix you up pretty quickly.  In my younger days, they would do the "pretzel twist" maneuver that fixed me instantly.

However, one case of it would not go away, even after PT, chiro, pain shots into the spine, etc.  Turned out to be a bone spur literally "crushing" my sciatic nerve root at L4/L5.  Neurosurgeon went in, I woke up and walked out of the hospital.  Done.  In a case like that, nothing will help aside from surgery.  You'll just waste a lot of money that gets you nowhere.

Lesson: You have to find the ROOT CAUSE of the pain.  I'd start with an x-ray and chiro.  If he/she doesn't find anything, the next step is an MRI and a visit to a neurosurgeon to see if the problem is originating in your spine.

In the end: Find it; fix it...or live with it forever...

I wish I had lived with it forever.I was a class 1 lorry driver and I tried all the treatments. Finally had a micro discectomy on L5/S1 .Went back to work and 12 months down the line I had a revised op on the same disc but with a different neurosurgeon.I had physio as usual but this time it felt completely different and ended up having to leave my job.I'm sure he did something in there as I now need 2400mgs of gabbapentin for nerve block and they say I have ddd.So many people ask me if I could go back would I still have had the ops.I answer them by saying no I wouldn't have had the op because that pain was nothing compared to what I am in now.

HI Sally I'm sorry to hear of your sufferings, but I have to say I've been struggling with my sciatica for over 4 years now though I have to say I suffer from spinal stenosis which unfortunately is a possible side effect!

If yours is due to an accident, knock or something similar you may be in luck as these tend to have a quick recovery period, I am having benefit from seeing an osteopath who manipulates by skeletal imbalance and fingers crossed its helping!

I wish you well on your hopefully short journey

    regards Dave

Read my post up higher.  You may need to see a neurosurgeon like I did...
