Scoliosis & Surgery

My daughter was diagnosed with scoliosis a year ago. Her curve s 57 degrees the consultant recommended surgery when we saw him in November. We went back in April the curve is still the same he has said he still recommends surgery but it is up to us. He thinks the curve could get worse but cannot guarantee it. Are there any other people out there in similar circumstances. What did you do. Do we wait and see if it gets worse or let her have the op.

She is a keen dancer and I am aware if she has surgery this will be somehthing she will not be able to do so well.

    Hi,

My daughter also has scoliosis and is a very keen dancer. Her curve is currently 31 degrees so our consultant has prescribed a brace. The whole process seems to take forever and is hugely stressful. I am told that she will almost certainly require surgery in the future.

I'm sorry I can't help with surgery experience but there is plenty on the web. I have applied to join this forum but apparently it takes a day or so.

I am trying to find anyone with experience of the SPINECOR brace, particularly in the UK. Has you consultant suggested bracing or is your daughter too old?

    Best of luck with everything

    Laura

Hi, I had corrective surgery on my spine for scoliosis in 1992 when I was 17yrs. I was also a keen dancer up to that point and thought that I would have to stop dancing. I actually went back to my class whilst still wearing a brace and haven't looked back since. I am now 32yrs old and still go to the same class twice a week. My doctor also couldn't guarantee that my curve wouldn't get worse but I decided to have surgery anyway. I can honestly say that apart from losing some of my flexibility in my back I am completely problem free in my back. On the down side I was diagnosed with osteoarthritis of my left hip when I was 23yrs. The doctors cannot explain why. I feel that after having surgery to correct my posture it has affected my hip joint. Hope this helps in some way.

Hi-I had my operation at the age of 14, 32yrs ago.Im a very determined person & Have managed to achieve what ever I have wanted. My back was 63degrees.I didnt really have any choice for the operation. The spine is stiffened off so she will have less movement in that area of her back.

    Good luck from no regrets
