I'm 66 and 18months ago I had an operation a fusion from L5 to S1. sadley I'm still in a great deal of pain, after a facit joint injecion into which took away all he pain for 24hours,I was ecstatic, but sadley the pain returned. After another standing x ray it shows that I'm getting more and more stooped. So now that they put in then replacing it from L5/S1 to T2

.

I'm finding it very difficult decied what to do, have it done and be stiff as a board, but hopefully out of pain, or carry on as I am in pain and still on morpine ( 5 years)

If there anyone out there who has had this proceedure, I would like to hear from them.

Please excuse any typos plus I cant spell and there no spell checker.

PS. sorry forgot to mention I also have MS

    Hi Jeni,

I have no idea if my story is helpful to you or not, but I am sharing it just in case. I had my first surgery at age 11on my upper back, at at age 48 I was told I needed another surgery to stabilize my tailbone. Instead, I began to practice Bikram Yoga, which is a gentle yoga practiced in a hot, humid room. My pain went away and has yet to come back 4 years later without the surgery.

HI, I had my T2 to L2 done two years ago this Februaury. I am quite stiff but can bend my head comfortably. I still do exercises. I have slight pain in the lower back occasionally as you probably know it puts pressure on the other area of the spine when the top of it is fuse. I also get a dull ache when I have sat at a work desk best part of the day but that soon goes once I start moving. No one can guarantee you being pain free if you decide to go for the operation. Being on morphine for 5 years cannot be good for the body, and can you live with the thought of taking it for however many years going forward? Can you cope with being stiff as a board as you put it. Pain is debilitating as it is. Can your surgeon give you an indiction as to what percentage you are likely to be in/out of pain. Only you can make the decision. I have no regrets in my decision as the pain before and the disfigurment to the body which would continued was worth having the operation. I think you need to seak to your consultant. Maybe he could put you in touch with someone who has had it done. If you are in the Uk, then spinal Uk may be worth contacting.  Good luck with whatever you decide.
