Hi

I have scoliosis s shape curve and maximum 100 degrees reached my age is 31 and married having a daughter too.i don't have pain nor breathing issues ..sometimes it happens because of hectic schedule otherwise all good.

My family is insisting me to undergo surgery to avoid future issues related to lungs or heart or say any disabilities. But i am not ready for it,because at this age correcting is rarely possible but risks are more.

Please help me n taking positive decision and also suggest best doctors for this.

Should i opt or no?

    Hi,

I think you definitely need to talk to a doctor. I had my surgery done at age 11 - the doctors told my parents that they needed to get it done well before I stopped growing. I don't see how it would help at your age, or why it's necessary if you are not in pain.

    Just my 2cents

I had a 67 degree curve when I was a teenager.  My sister's was not as bad, but we both had scoliosis surgery on the same day.  We didn't have any pain or health problems before our surgery.  The doctor kept asking who in our family had it, since it is usually hereditary, but we didn't know anyone.  When my mom was 61, we noticed she started leaning slightly.  Her scoliosis came on very rapidly.  She is now 76, weighs about 70 pounds, and her bony body is completely contorted, causing her organs to all be displaced.  No exaggeration: she will sometimes fall asleep with her head laying on her legs.  That's how bad it is.  I would strongly urge you to check into having the surgery before it is too late.  I don't mean to scare you; just to share my experience.  Good luck to you.

I don't know if you have seen any doctors.  We saw an orthopedic doctor first, and he referred us to a special doctor in Chicago.  My sister and I have led normal lives since then; she has 4 children, I have 3.  Now that we are older, we have back pains, but usually ibuprofen helps.  My mom's happened so fast, and her bones were so weak, she was not healthy enough to have the surgery.  My advice is for you to see a special doctor (or two) and get their medical advice.  They will tell you if they can do the surgery, or they can tell you what will happen if you don't have it.  Finding out will give you your answers and peace about it.  Best wishes.

I'm 32 with S shape scoliosis. The top part is at 88 degrees and the bottom part is at 66 degrees. I went to a spine specialist and he wants to do a 3 part surgery and all 3 surgeries are considered high risk. So I went to 3 other Doctors for second opinions, all 3 Doctors told me to not have the 3 surgeries. They all said it would cause me more problems, and that there's a good chance I could become paralyzed or I could even die on the operating table. My scoliosis causes severe back pain and I have nerve damage also. I take pain medication and go to physical therapy 3 days a week. I went to school with 2 girls that had severe scoliosis and both had the operations. One girl died during the surgery and the other is in worse shape then before the operation. It's ok to have the surgery when your young and the curve isn't as bad, but once you get older and your curve gets worse it's best to not have the operations. The best thing is to do physical therapy and if your in pain there are several things a Doctor can do for you to ease the pain. I hope this was helpful and I wish you the best of luck.

You can get yourself checked out and discuss potential surgery but would not recommend it. It causes more harm than good as restricts your motions and does add the pain from what people have written. It is also lucky if you do not need revisions. Best to keep an eye on the back but 30 to 50 should be a grace period xD . Heard that might get lung issues after 50 but nothing drastic. I am at 90 and ran off from surgery as risk was too much (in my case - hip dysplasia added to it so could stop walking), almost 30 but worst period was at 21ish when bones finished growing. Your family probably does not know enough about surgery due to one thing - we are rare as loads of people go through it as teens and from what I seen - few who did not struggle way less than them. Still, not enough research and consulting will not hurt plus will give you a clearer picture.
