I was diagnosed 6 months ago as a carrier. At that point my ferritin was 286 my saturation was 40% my iron was 133 and my IBC was 329. My blood doctor didnt seem concerned and wanted to monitor me. I just went back last week and my ferritin was up to 305 from 286 my saturation went down from 40% to 30% my iron went down from 133 to 102 and my I BC went down from 329 to 325. (I did go and donate blood in June for the first time ever.) My doctor still is not concerned with my ferritin level. He wants me to come back in December and will run a liver test before then as well I believe he said. He also said probably after that visit he will only recheck once a year instead of every 6 months. I am still new to all this so my queation is that even though all my levels are good but my ferritin is still elevated and actually was the only thing that went up should I be concerned and for that matter should my doctor be more concerned? My mother has heamocromotois and is concerned about my ferritin level and doesnt understand why my doctor is starting phlebotomys...im not sure what to think.

Hi Michelle. First of all welcome to the group....I would not worry about anything at this stage. You say you're a carrier. So there is no real need for you to have a phlebotomy I'd have thought. Ferritin levels can be raised for various reasons...inflammation, infections etc...so they might just go down normally. Normal range for women tends to be 50-200, so you are slightly over..but there could be reasons for this. There is certainly no harm at all in having a phlebotomy to lower your level to normal range. Did you ask your doctor why your level may have gone up?
So far, I would not be concerned about things....just ask what's raising your levels as you're only a carrier...and a phlebotomy can't do any harm...keep monitoring those levels....let me know how it goes...
Mike.

Thanks Mike ( ; I didn't think to ask what could be raising my ferritin. He said 6 months ago that infection could and I did have a cold prior to. But this time I haven't been sick and had donated blood 3 weeks prior so was hoping it would have gone down a little instead of up. I will definitely ask in December when I go back if its still increased or has gone up again.

Did the blood transfusion people prick your thumb before you donated? I was under the impression that I can't donate as my serum ferritin is high but my other levels are normal.Perhaps I should get back in touch with them.
