Second hip

Hi Folks

i had my right hip replaced Dec11 came home Dec 13 posterior now it matches the left hip that was done May 30

im in pain but taking pain pills every four hours, doing the exercises, the simple ones, walking around with walker and just glad that grinding pain is gone. I’m also icing every so often. My foot is swollen so lift it a bit on pillow however don’t want to break restrictions

i do have an embarrassing problem, I’ve got a scaly rash on my buttocks that I’ve been treating so far with Vaseline. I need advice, do you think this can develop into something like an infection that could go to the surgery site? It’s from sitting on those horrible pads and their terrible toilet paper.

do I contact surgeon or family doctor or just keep treating it myself? The rash isn’t very large and it’s protected by any more irritation with a pad.

just some thoughts on this please.

thank you

Better to be safe than sorry!! I just had mine done on the 13th. Home noe and husband is sterilizing everything as the Surgeon gave us a huge lecture on infection. Even though mine is sealed with waterproof dressing I am still very careful. The rash might be from sitting or laying on your back?

      Hi Shari

the incision is covered with a bandage and that was just changed incision looks clean staples come out on Dec 29

i think the rash was caused by sitting on those hospital pads as they are not very soft plus hospital has tissue paper like stuff for toilet paper

i didnt get this rash previously just a bit concerned that it could get worse

I hate to bother surgeon as he is so busy however he is the best to know I guess

      good luck with your recovery

Dear Ginnys - I would not take any chances if I were you. At the very least, see your GP about the rash, especially as you suspect it may be something you picked up in the hospital! Hopefully it will turn out to be simple abrasion irritation, but if it is not, you certainly won't regret getting a proper diagnosis and treatment. As Shari 12676 said, better safe than sorry.

    Good luck.

I would contact a dermatologist or general practitioner. They can probably prescribe a cortisone cream that will clear it up.

      Hi Mary

      thanks for your advice

where I live in Canada it takes months to see any kind of specialist, however today the area in question seems to be getting smaller

I will still call the surgeon’s office and see what they advise

I don’t want anything to happen now that I’ve gone through two hip replacements at almost 79 years old

      thanks again

Hi Ginny's, I developed a but rash and suddenly a bunch of pimples. I washed them with an acne soap, then applied polysporin and in a week rash and pimples were gone. Don't scratch it. A friend told me to use penasten on any rash and it works wonders.

      Hi Claudia

the rash seems smaller today so maybe Vaseline is working I do have someone getting polysporin today. The rash is not itchy or anything I just worry about it developing into an infection

i have a phone call in to surgeon so will see what they say

      thanks for your advice

    Hi,

I'm glad your rash is getting better. I got a prickly heat type of rash 3 days after the op, on my back, probably because I was too hot in the hospital bed. I saw my local gp and he prescribed a 1% cortisone creme and some antihistimine which cleared it up in 4 days. I also had to sleep on my unoperated side so that I could get my back off the heat of the thick mattress. The prickly heat is a very itchy condition so was glad to get rid of it.

Anyway hope your condition continues improvement.

      Hi Tony

i received a call back from surgeon’s office and secretary told me to keep using Vaseline or can use Polysporin but also to give it air. She also told me to take Benedryl and get back to her if it gets worse or weeps

she didn’t think it would develop into infection but to keep an eye on it, which is difficult to do in the area it is, lol

i just worry a lot so as everyone on the forum has said better be safe than sorry and I’m more relieved now since I spoke to the surgeon s office and the area is getting smaller

what an embarrassing subject this is but guess everyone has problems of one sort or the other

      thanks for your advice

      hope you are doing well
