Sedation and MRI's?

Posted , 4 users are following.

Tomorrow I'm getting an MRI and they're going to sedate me.

How long do MRI's last?

How long does it take to get sedated?

Will I be sleepy when they sedate me? Will I want to sleep?

The MRI won't last too long, 10-30 minuts ish depending on what they are scanning. Is there a particular reason you are being sedated?

Sedation is funny, some people go straight to sleep, some people remain awake and even talking but won't remember anything about what happened, and some people just feel very relaxed, can remember bits about what went on but not everything etc. Sedation takes effect very quicky (within seconds) and you come round pretty quickly too. When you come round you should be sat in a chair for a little while, perhaps offered a drink, before you go home. You won't be able to drive so you will need somone there to take you home. They advise people to have someone with them once they get home. You may feel rather sleepy for the rest of the day, and for a while after coming round you may talk gibbersih or you may let out some of your darkest secrets if you get asked questions pmsl. And it is likely you won't remember much of the few hours after coming round. After that you should find yourself back to normal pretty quickly. There will be no pain as the MRI is non envasive. Good luck!

And remember to follow the instructions on your letter regarding eating and drinking. x

I think like Craig said. So I don't get panicked.

It is probably like conscious sedation. You are awake but heavily sedated so you don't get panicked during the test. Ithe would be the only way I can do it as I feel super confined in the MRI tube. The test can be as long as an hour or longer depending on what is being scanned. You will be out of it so it will go by in a blink of an eye.

Or in other words, should I go to sleep when I go home.

That really depends on how much sedation they use. They had to sedate me 3 times so I did end up sleeping, my daughter fell asleep two seconds after they inected her and when she woke up 5 minutes later she cried for a while (I do that too under sedation or gernal anaesthetic) and then was back to her normal self an hour later, she didn't sleep at all. xxx

Whether you should or not depends entirely on how you feel sweetie. xxx

Whenever I do fall asleep, will I feel weird when I wake up?

And how long will I sleep?

      Will I forget what happened?

Why are you being sedated for MRI. claustrophobic ?

they are a small space. Listening to music helps. I have many MRI and never been sedated. Perhaps there more to the story why the MRI if I may ask? Do you have difficulty staying still?

usually a MRI is only a few minutes yet if your like me a 1/2 hour feels like hours,

hope you do well let me know how it went

    Kind Regards

    HOPE
