Sedation and Paraylsis

Hello,

I'm due to have an Endoscopy and been told that Sedation is preferable, but then someone I knew who had it said you are paralysed during the Sedation and cannot move, speak or react which is horrible if there is pain or something is wrong and you cannot get the doctors attention.

Is this true? Or not?

    its not that bad...

the pain is bearable...its more just disgusting instead of real pain if you ask me.

First of all, you won't feel any pain under sedation, so you shouldn't worry about pain you can't talk about.

I did endoscopies without sedation, in my opinion it is better to do endoscopy without it because in that case the doctor can act according your reactions. But it only works if the doctor who perform endoscopy is good and experienced professional(It is not always the case).

If you trust your doctor, everything will be fine even without sedation.

Gravit and Edeire I absolutely agree with you. I like to know what is going on and I found the staff involved in the procedure were great. They invited me to turn over and watch and laughed when I asked " What is that black shadow?" It was the exit from stomach to intestine!

There was absolutely no pain whatsoever. I do admit to having a large swallowing capacity and all I felt was a sensation rather like swallowing a rather biggish piece of dry bread.

I was able to drive myself twenty miles home. My in case arrangements were not needed.

Not sure what the professionals feel re sedation or not. I guess they don't want a patient to be distressed. They told me I was the easiest patient all morning. Hope all goes well.

First you dont lay there paralyzed! It's the best sleep in the world. I have had several using Propofol and it's about a 20 min. from going under to wake-up time.. I dont agree that NO sedation is better! First you dont know if you will have the gag reflex or if you will freak... when you wake up from propofol you feel amazing, so well rested and ready to go! The doctor most likely will do biopseys that is normal! when you wake up your doctor will come in to tell you his basic findings! Nothing to it! In and out! It's easier for the doctor if you are asleep because he wont have any interruptions and have to try several times if you domt respond well to the scope going down your throat. I know several people whom were awake and the procedure had to be postponed because of patient reaction. so relax and don't worry about a thing, nothing to it! Good luck!

I had mine done when I was conscious, they just sprayed some Lidocine on my throat to numb it. If you are really scared of sedation, you can choose the be awake. It wasn't sooo horrible that it will traumatize you. Plus the pain was minimal.
