Seeing an allergist, worth it?

Has anyone tried seeing an allergist and gotten help managing their symptoms?

My doctor/surgeon at a major hearing clinic in LA is a well known ENT.  When I asked about seeing an allergist as I continued to work with him, he didn't sound enthused.  (And the allergist is from the same clinic he works for, so no reason for him to be against it for personal reasons).   He gave me her contact info etc.  But again, his manner and subtle comments told me that the allergy testing is a long, complicated road, that probably won't help.

As a side note.  I take Allegra for seasonal allergies, (it happened to be one of the allergy meds he recommended as a what-the-heck, try-it, can't-hurt option) and it doesn't help me at all.

I'm going to start taking zyrtec to see if it helps any. I get sinus infections every time the seasons change so even if it doesn't help with the vertigo maybe it will help with my sinuses!

    Hi there,

I was considering going down that route myself.

Before I got pregnant with my little girl I used to take an allergy tablet every day, prescribed by the doctor. I have problems with my sinuses constantly being blocked and suffer from seasonal allergies although only mildly. I have since stopped taking them as I couldn't when I was pregnant and have not asked for more. It's been a while since she is 2 1/2.

In my case there is a clear connection with my symptoms getting worse when I have a cold as after all it's all connected, isn't it?

I'm going to ask about it at my next ent appointment in November. Let me know if you find anything out.

    Good luck.

Yeah exactly, it would make sense if it were connected. I'm hoping that it helps a little at least!

Allergy pills will only work if you have an actual allergy. In cases where you do have issues with sinus congestion, using a decongestant with guiafenisin (thins secretions) is helpful. I live in a dry climate and keep a humidifier running in fall and winter, I used to do sinus flushes but that became uncomfortable. I do wonder how many people with MD have sinus issues and whether there is a correlation.

I have issues with my sinuses every time weather changes every year, so that's why I'm wondering if its seasonal allergies. I use my netipot when I'm having issues though

It is possible then that you do have allergies, I have the same issue except that things just get worse. I seem to have a low level sinus issue year round but it gets worse with weather changes. I did go to a doctor who did a blood test and said I did not have allergies-which leaves me with no answer as to why.

I personally was treated for allergy issues initially before 2 years later was diagnosed with md. I do have allergies but have found that there are other things going on that contributed to my MD. There are many things that can cause MD and sifting through these to figure out your own body is crucial. Those first 2 years the doctor would say your ears look fine. I was so mad.. my right ear felt like it was going to burst. He even had the nerve to ask my husband to look at it and said see he says it looks fine too. I am on progesterone, gingko, and horsetail
