Selincro - PCT wont pescribe

Posted , 5 users are following.

Hello All, im a prime candidate for Selincro and have ticked all the boxes for using but despite NICE recommending use my PCT wont pescribe it.  Anyone know why this is and can you challenge?  I've bought a private pescription now which should arrive shortly.

Would be interested to hear others experiences.  Does it work?  is it worth it?  I'm fortunate i had all my liver function, kidney, everything blood tests back and so far (47) i havent damaged myself but thats only a matter of time i think.  my alcohol use seems to be a form of self sabotage.  I sit and home and drink instead of trying to get out and live life more fully.  i need to lose a lot of weight too and alcohol just kills that.  I'm hoping this drug will give me the hand up that i need.  I have lots of other tools to help myself and try very hard.

Thanks :-)

Unfortunately, this is the case all over the country, TLB. There seems to be no recognition of the fact that a massive amount of money would be saved by the NHS if they spent a little now on helping people overcome their alcohol problem before they begin to suffer health problems that could cost the NHS tens of thousands of pounds.

I use this method to treat clients and it DOES work. In Finland, they have a 78% success rate. We have seen amazing results.

Do some reading about how to use it. You are best searching 'The Sinclair Method' to see how it is best used. Searches for Nalemefene or Selincro are less likely to tell you all that you need to know. The video 'One Little Pill' and the eBook 'The Cure for Alcoholism' by Roy Eskapa are good resources to start with.

Hi Paul, thanks so much for that. Very encouraging. it does seem terribly short sighted not to pescribe something that could help so many people and save so much money for the NHS.

I will do the research you suggest too.  I have read some of the threads here and different peoples experiences.  I've read about dividing the pill into three (ive bought new capsules to put them in to avoid the upset stomach aspect) and taking them for seven days to overcome side effects and taking them a few hours earlier than the suggested times.  I really only do need a 'leg up' which i hope this is what this does.

Should arrive this week and if they work buying them (£63 for 14) is still cheaper in every way than buying and the results of alchohol.  I'll update once ive started.

Interested in any advice users may have too.

      thanks again

      Tina

I wouldn't recommend taking less than the correct dose which is 18mg, Tina. It is set at that dose to be effective. The risk of taking a lower dose is that you would be drinking while not fully protected and therefore still stimulating the receptors that the drug is supposed to block.

Ah ok!  I will try full dose as recommended for starters and see how i go.  Do you agree on the take it for 7 days to overcome the side effects aspect which is what ive read on threads here or just do as the instructions say and take only when drinking.

Yes, I have said that myself. Initially, the goal is to get past the side effects which tend to be worse the first time you take it and be kess each time you take it and gone after about 7 days if you take it daily. The rewards are well worth any early pain smile Good luck! smile

Hi Paul Do you know where my GP could refer me, so that i can get couselling and Selincro?

Hello Pete, I am afraid I don't. Every area differs and many Primary Care Trusts have not approved Nalmefene (Selincro) for their GPs to prescribe, mainly, I believe, because of the cost and a lack of understanding of the money it could save them in the long-term.

HI tlb. I just want to say, you have been in my thoughts...do you have any help from CAS the community and services ?. they may be able to help with selincro....your GP....why not complain to the health authority...they are DENYING YOU A DRUG THAT COULD SAVE YOUR SAVE YOUR LIFE.....sadly, and so, so wrongly...it is viewed as self inflicted. !!!!! ...

Hi Deirdre, I've got a lot of support other than this non pescribe.  The way I view it is I would spend much more on alcohol than i would on the pescrption so I'm ok with that for a while...

      Thanks for your care.  xx

Hi All,  wanted to update with my experience so far.  Im not sure if its me, the selincro, the effect, the side effects or a combination of it all but i feel like my mind is being blown. Some of it in a good way. Most of it infact but its fast paced and a bit unnerving.  I had not drunk for five days before using sel. for the first time last friday.  from the advise on this site i took it early afternoon instead of an hour before and went on my merry way.  it actually didnt stop me drinking any more than i usually would but something was very different.  The next day i felt like hell.  a mixture of hangover and side effects i suppose BUT  whereas normally i get myself into a cycle of drinking every day even with a horrible hangover.  im always just holding out till later or savouring the night befores drinking memory and holding out until i can feel like it again.  I guess thats the reward aspect/craving which i had never realised what it was.  I had no desire to drink at all again the following day despite giving myself full permission to do so.  i tested myself to almost making myself have a drink but i just didnt want to and didnt drink again all weekend which is most unusual.  it usually takes me days or weeks to break the cycle again.  usually because i feel so ill i cant function.  So on Tuesday i planned to drink on a casual basis. my friend and i were planning an evening in the garden chatting and kids playing on swingball. not a big night obvs with kids but a few glasses. i had forgotten to take tablets to work so knew i would get home have to take one and wait and hour. which i did.  my favourite chenin blanc did not go down well.  i didnt like the taste and i didnt like what it did.  i forced it though but it was so strange because 1.  i didnt drink anything like the normal amount - a bit less than a bottle over 3 hours instead of my normal two bottles in two hours ish.  2.  i knew i was a bit drunk and could almost observe that but didnt like it at all.  Yesterday i felt like hell.  had someside effects from the Sel. stretching like a cat, nausea which past and general feeling of being spaced but some of that may have been hangover?  The hangover itself again differed.  its like making yourself ill for no reason - no reward??  usually a hangover is crap but ok until the next one but this felt like whats the point in this?  making myself feel deliberately ill for nothing.  the point is and sorry for the long post but i m utterly perplexed as this feels massive to me - i dont want to drink.  i dont like it. i dont like the taste, i dont like how it makes me feel, there is no fun in it and just to make myself feel more crap the next day.  This is only after two tablets over 5 days!!!  Is this what happens?  Is this normal?  Im going out to eat with a friend this evening who's a big drinker and we have drunk a lot together.  I dont want to drink.  Im not going to drink.  I have no desire to drink whatsoever!!!   As a last shot I wouldnt ever take a tablet that late in the day again def take earlier/lunch time/early afternoon.  Would love to hear what you think of my experience and if this is normal and how it compares to others.

    Thanks

    Tina x

TLB, you need to take the drug about 7 times (if you took it daily, it takes about a week) before the side effects are gone. Some people find that they are gone aftet just two or three times.

You mention taking a pill 1 hour before a drink. The recommended time is 90 minutes to 2 hours. It may be working ok for you but people differ. I am saying this for the benefit of other people...The danger is that, if you only allow one hour and your body hasn't had time for the Nalmefene (Selincro) to take effect, the first drink or two will slip through while you are still unprotected and that would mean that you could find the Nalmefene less effective and your drinking will reduce more slowly than it would if the drug had had adequate time to work.

Stick with taking it TLB (IF you are going to be drinking.) The side effects will subside until you get none at all.
