sensation of something stuck in throat

Posted , 6 users are following.

I was diagnosed about 3 months ago with 2cm Barrett's and large hiatus hernia. Consultant prescribed esomeprzole 40mg twice a day and ranitidine at night but I am still having acid reflux . I also have this constant feeling of something stuck in my throat but the consultant seemed surprised at this as he said there was no sign of restriction but may be due to inflammation. Should this not have gone by now or will it ever go? Is it normal.

The feeling of something stuck in the throat is probably globus. It's a symptom of extra-oesophageal reflux that is reported by 50% of refluxers.

It's the cricopharyngeal muscle contracting or spasming in an attempt to prevent reflux at the upper oesophageal sphincter.

The PPIs and H2 blockers will reduce acid but not the reflux.

I was on 80mg omeprazole for years but still suffered chronic cough and other symptoms of aspirated extra-oesophageal reflux, The I had a fundoplication operation and it stopped reflux leaving me symptom free and meds free.

    Hi Claire

The sensation of a  lump in your throat is probably due to the acid reflux, I get this when I have a bad day.

When do you last have anything to eat before you go bed ?,  as this can worsen the symptoms if you eat late.

You will probably always have that sensation as long as you have acid reflux, especially if it is bad.

I take LANSOPRAZOLE 30mg, one per day, on rare occasions I take two. Generally this tablet is very good and I would recommend it.

Hope you feel better soon, all the best.
